Have you read those Kushiel books? By... Jacqueline Carey or something? Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Avatar, Kushiel's Scion, etc. I'm actually surprised at how good they are, though I don't find the lead character engaging, and the world the author created is actually really interesting and detailed, even though it's ripped off of some actual history and actual places.
