I've started to wonder whether part of our problems as a country might just be simply that we're administratively unwieldy size-wise; and I've vaguely wondered about the idea of basically having smaller regional governments, above the state level and with more resources to throw towards problems than a state government, but with less territory and people to balance than the federal government. Maybe six of these centered on federal reserve centers so that everyone always has access to a common currency. The current federal government would lose a lot of its power but serve as an umbrella entity similar to the EU. Eh, not like I know anything about this stuff.
I'm afraid if we did that, the bible belt would be allowed to become even more insular, probably get more of what they want down there even as the rest of the country progresses. That's a terrifying thought considering where I come from.
