"Macho engineering" is my new favorite term for that.

Men with bad haircuts and chunky framed glasses bringing PROGRESS! In a different way than CCC and NWA blue-collars bringing PROGRESS! or National Socialist or Soviet clean-cut men bringing PROGRESS! And quite different, too, from the Victorian/Edwardian PROGRESS! before that era.

I can see how people might get nostalgic for PROGRESS! in an era where one's choice seems to be either the "we need to band together and save something at least before it all goes away" attitudes of the 70s, or the "who the fuck cares as long as I get mine/USA USA USA!" attitudes of the 80s.
