Summary: Yukimura uses his connection with Atobe to find out about Sanada's mysterious cousin.
"Rendezvous point C" was a small, yet elegant restaurant found in the suburbs of Tokyo, where people were far less likely to recognize Atobe as anything other than the businessman he showed to the outside world.
Yukimura liked the place because it was quiet, and they served all kinds of cuisine from places around the world. It was the only one of its kind, to Yukimura's knowledge.
He had arrived early, at about quarter til 9, and had spent the extra time trying to mentally prepare himself. He couldn't afford to irritate Atobe, he knew, so he put away his usual snarky and teasing attitude. Atobe was probably the best source of information that Yukimura had in regards to Sanada's cousin and the family's ties to the Atobe family, and Yukimura knew that his usual behavior would likely not get him anywhere.
He didn't want to tell Atobe too much, like details about his rape, that he knew Sanada's cousin was the one who'd done it, but he also knew he might have to. And that was why he hadn't wanted the agent assigned as Atobe's "bodyguard" to be there. The last thing he wanted was for the story to spread through the Agency's gossip chain.
Yukimura sipped his water and glanced at his watch. Almost 9. Atobe was due to arrive any moment now...
Atobe entered the restaurant and made his way to Yukimura's table, sitting down just as his watch changed to 9 o'clock. "Hello, Yukimura-san, how has your day been?"
Atobe had dropped Jackal at his apartment, telling him that he would head straight home. It was a lie, but Atobe was rather good at juggling those by now. He didn't know how off the record this visit with Yukimura was going to be.
Yukimura nodded his greeting to Atobe.
"Today? Could have been worse. The past few...not so good." He took another drink of his water before continuing.
"All past attitude and snark aside, I appreciate you making time for me, Atobe-san. I know this is far from business related, but...you're the best person I can turn to for this."
"I believe it is good for my karma to help you," Atobe said, sipping at his own water. "Future lives to think about and what-not."
And this one. Doing Yukimura a favor would mean getting one in return, if he ever needed it.
Yukimura smiled a little, but it felt nervous. He knew what he was getting into, asking favors from someone powerful in the Yakuza. But it was better than letting Gen charge headfirst into it, without knowing what "it" was.
"I...am doing a bit of research on a certain someone. He is, to my knowledge, somehow related to both you, and a very close friend of mine. My friend's parents claimed that this person was their nephew, my friend's cousin. But they were quite obviously hiding something, and I need to know what. Since he is related to you or, at least, the Atobe family...I thought you might be able to tell me about him. Or, help me find out about him."
Atobe tilted his head. The framework of the Atobe family tree was not a yakuza secret. "I'll tell you what I can. What do you know about him?"
Atobe ran his head through his family tree, trying to guess who Yukimura could be talking about.
Yukimura nodded, recalling the details of the picture and his memories of the man.
"The only description I can give you of him is what he looked like around...sixteen years ago, and what he might possibly look like today. The photo I saw of him was old. He was a teenager...maybe...fifteen, sixteen years old at the time it was taken. He was tall, even then, with a powerful build. Dark hair, dark eyes, and a scar..." Yukimura traced the line on his own face where Sanada's cousin's scar was. "From his left eyebrow down to his jaw. It's most likely still there."
Atobe listened attentively and then his eyes widened as Yukimura traced out the scar. His own mind formed a face that was very familiar. Dark eyes, a sneer that was aimed at him as often as the other could get away with. The man was vile, and Atobe shivered from memories he preferred not to think about.
"Katsuki," Atobe sneered, picking up his napkin and unfolded it so he could refold it carefully. "I know exactly who you mean."
Yukimura perked up at the look of realization on Atobe's face.
Judging by Atobe's reaction, the other man didn't care for this...Katsuki...much.
Having been raped by him, Yukimura wasn't really surprised.
"How...connected to you is he?" Yukimura asked, just the first of many questions that were flooding his mind at the moment.
The closer the two were, the more Atobe was likely to know. And the more Yukimura could ask.
"He is my cousin," Atobe said. "Bastard son of one of my uncles. My father had an elder brother who was regarded unfit to takeover the gumi. His son is held in the same regard."
Less than that, if memory served Atobe correctly. "I'm afraid my upper-class upbringing doesn't give me the proper vocabulary to give him justice."
"He's a complete shit, to put it nicely?" Yukimura asked, a slightly amused smile on his face.
It was a pretty direct connection to the Yakuza, then, if Katsuki was Atobe's first-cousin.
What to ask next... There were so many questions...
He stared into his water as he thought, tossing them around in his mind.
The next logical question was, "Do you know what this...Katsuki...character's connection is to the Sanada family? Or what his mother's name was?" Either bit of information would be useful, something Yukimura could track down.
"Katsuki-kun's mother was from the middle-class, I believe," Atobe said, leaning back in his chair, trying to think back on any conversations he had heard about the matter. "I don't know much about her, I'm afraid."
Sanada . . . sounded vaguely familiar. "Sanada, you say?" Atobe paused a long moment. There was something, he just couldn't remember it properly. "The name is familiar, though from where, I can't tell you." Sanada... "Ah, wait... Military family, yes?"
Was he related to them somehow? He didn't think so. "I don't think I'm related to any Sanadas. If he is connected to them, it must be from his mother."
"Yes. Well, the eldest son is. The youngest was, but has changed occupations. The father works for the Treasury, the mother is with the patent office, now."
Yukimura worked things through in his mind. Atobe knew of the Sanada family, but was most likely not related. Katsuki was related to them. A cousin, or so Gen's parents had claimed.
...It was possible that the connection was on Gen's mother's side. But Atobe didn't know about Katsuki's mother, and Yukimura didn't know much about Gen's mother or her family. He didn't even know her maiden name, so he couldn't ask much more about Katsuki and his connection to Gen's family.
Well. At least he could find out more about the man himself.
"Is Katsuki involved with...the family business?" he asked, referring to the Yakuza. "And if so...how closely?"
Atobe tilted his head, curious. "I thought we weren't talking business."
This was getting interesting. Yukimura was looking into the Yakuza, specifically Katsuki? Atobe would have little interest in the likes of Katsuki if it wasn't for the fact that it would be dangerous for Atobe to ignore him. Some people just didn't liked being overlooked when it came to inheritance.
"We're not." Well. Okay, maybe they were, at this point.
Yukimura sighed again. "My interest in Katsuki is personal. As is his connection to the Sanada family. It's the family I'm concerned about, more so than him, but the two seem to go hand-in-hand. I have no desire to get more into your business affairs than I absolutely have to be, but... For personal reasons, I can't let the mystery around Katsuki and his connection to the Sanadas get past me."
He ran his fingers through his hair, a slightly nervous habit. "My friend is also looking into Katsuki. I don't want him getting into your family's business at all, if possible, which is why I'm so interested in Katsuki's connection to it. I don't want him in danger, but I want to know just how much danger he might get into if he keeps investigating."
Atobe nodded. "Investigating Katsuki will be dangerous. His involvement with the family business is enough that poking around him could bring about a rather...harsh warning, and that's only if my father is in a good mood when he hears about it."
Though Katsuki getting caught for something that had nothing to do with the business would probably make his father happy, if only it meant having a loose cannon boxed away. Atobe would be more than happy to make it so.
"Why this...interest...in Katsuki?" Atobe had low opinions of the man and couldn't imagine anyone wanting to know more about him. "Has he done something of note?"
Dirt on Katsuki was always a good thing to have.
Yukimura's eyes went wide, and he made a note to again warn his lover that looking into this cousin was not a good idea. Gen would hate it, he knew, but... The Yakuza was a dangerous organization, and Gen didn't even know he was dealing with them. Yukimura, at least, was aware of the risk.
"This is why I didn't want the other agent assigned to you present for this conversation." He took a deep, slightly shaking breath. "Recently, I...have remembered a few things. First was the realization that, when I was about fourteen, I was raped. The second, triggered by Katsuki's photo in the Sanada family album, was that that guy with the scar, Katsuki, was the one who'd raped me."
Yukimura fidgeted a little with his water glass. "I still...don't remember much about it. But there's no doubt in my mind that he's the one," he admitted, unable to meet Atobe's eyes. There were only three people who knew, now. Himself, his lover, and now Atobe, the latter being someone that Yukimura wasn't sure how much he could trust.
But Atobe was his only real connection. He had to trust him, at least for this.
"Is this a revenge matter then?" Atobe asked. Yukimura wasn't telling Atobe anything he hadn't already known. He knew exactly what Katsuki was capable of already. "You couldn't do anything about this legally, as I'm sure you know."
So his handler was on Katsuki's list of victims. Atobe wasn't sure what to do with this information. "Are you hoping to kill him?"
"No, it's not like that at all. I wasn't going to do anything when I remembered being raped. I just wanted to put it behind me and move on. It's been sixteen years, after all. But my friend wanted to look into it, to find out who'd done it. And...if I hadn't remembered who it was, i probably could've talked him into just letting it go."
But now...
"Then, when I saw that picture and remembered who it was, and we found out that he was connected to the Sanada family, he insisted on finding out more. Hearing your family name didn't seem to ring any bells to him, but it did to me, for obvious reasons."
Gen was going to be difficult about this, Yukimura knew. He wasn't going to let it go easily, if at all.
"I'm simply curious. I want to know why the Sanadas seemed so secretive about Katsuki. I want to know exactly how they're tied to you and your family. And most importantly, I need to know how hard to fight my friend on this, to know what kind of danger he could end up running into. If Katsuki gets tossed in prison along the way, I most certainly won't complain, but it's not my intention."
Gen would probably want revenge of some sort. Yukimura wouldn't be surprised if he did. The whole situation would become highly ironic, then, if Yukimura ended up having to protect Katsuki from Gen in order to protect Gen from the wrath of the Yakuza.
"So you don't want revenge then?" Atobe asked, eyebrow raised. Yukimura was different than Atobe originally expected. "You merely want to keep your friend out of trouble." This seemed rather hard for Atobe to swallow. "Would this 'friend' try to get vengeance for you then?"
Why would hearing the name Sanada ring bells for this other man, though? Was he connected with the Sanadas as well? "Anyway, warn your friend away. It would be unwise to investigate further. If you are so determined to put this behind you, I suggest you convince your friend to do the same. Nothing but trouble will come out of this...'innocent' curiosity."
"I don't, no. Well, alright, I admit, I'd love the chance to smack him around a little, but I'd rather just move on. Gen, though...He might. I wouldn't be surprised if he does, in fact. I've tried to talk him out of it already, as soon as I heard the Atobe name. But he wasn't willing to just let it go, especially since it's a member of his own family that--"
Yukimura clapped his hands over his mouth. He hadn't been intending to tell Atobe that his friend was a Sanada and that was why he had the heightened interest.
Atobe leaned back in his seat. Ah, now he was actually getting the bigger picture. "I'll make sure the men keep an eye out for Sanada...Gen, you said?" Atobe pulled out his phone, and made a small memo to himself on it.
"To be frank with you, Yukimura-san, I don't care whether your friend kills Katsuki or not. He'd be one less man I'll have to watch after. However, I can't let him get close enough that he discovers that the noble house of Atobe has some underhanded methods of retaining its stature. I'm sure you understand."
Atobe put his phone away. "For the sake of the two of us getting along in the future, I'll try to make sure he's politely told off when he gets too close. If he's persistent, I'm afraid I can't guarantee anything."
"Genichirou, yes. And I appreciate that, Atobe-san," Yukimura smiled. He understood completely that the Atobe name had to retain its reputation. "Gen and I...have an agreement, that in doing our own private investigations, we are supposed to tell each other everything we learn. I promised him that I would tell him all I could. I would, of course, leave out anything about the Atobe family's connection to the Yakuza, and anything that would compromise your position with the Agency."
"I asked Gen to promise me that if I told him to stop his investigation, he would stop then and there. I...don't know that he will, though, so I'll keep trying with him."
Yukimura had a bad feeling in his gut, that Gen would get too close and refuse to heed the warnings. He also couldn't shake the feeling that Katsuki was more closely connected to the Sanada family than Gen's parents led them to believe.
"If I may, I have one more small favor I'd like to ask of you, Atobe-san. If you could please find out Katsuki's mother's name. Gen's parents behaved awfully strange, for Katsuki to supposedly be just a cousin, and I'm curious as to why."
Atobe knew nothing about Katsuki's mother, just that she was out of the picture. Atobe had assumed her dead and never gave it much thought. "I'll look into it. Anything else, Yukimura-san?"
Yukimura shook his head. "I think that covers it all. ...Thank you, Atobe-san. I'm indebted to you for this."
Now he had to tell Gen as much as he could about what he had learned, and once again ask him not to look into the matter. He knew it wouldn't go over well, and he most certainly was not looking forward to the conversation, but it had to be done.
Atobe smiled as he rose from his seat. "Yes, you are."
This was nice. Katsuki may be out of the picture soon, and his handler owed him a favor for the whole thing. All he needed to do know was think about how to cash in.
And wave his men away from Sanada Genichirou of course. Hopefully the other won't persist on the matter too much, or if he did, he followed it all the way through before Atobe would have to do anything about it.
Maybe he could talk his father into letting that slide too. His father had never been fond of Katsuki either, too much of a risk.
