I do hope this is allowed... it's not so much pairing, but it does have big consequences for potential pairings. And it deals with everybody's pet hate (or is it?) .... SENBATSU ARC!!!

Cut for spoilers, Senbatsu, and Tezuka discussion... just who the hell is he, anyway? )

You've got such great points there, and it really reinforces for me just how strong my cultural filter is... and you've helped me understand Tezuka a little more. Senbatsu could actually have been really interesting if it explored Ryoma's western side, or how he was different to both the Japanese and Western teams (if they hadn't chosen to simplify it with the evil gaijin sponsor line!)

Although I've just realised while I thought it was petty of Tez to forbid Ryoma from a match with Kevin that was irrelevant to the tournament, Tezuka did actually know Ryoma was the substitute member. I wonder how he was planning to divulge that information, had Ryoma not sought out Kevin, and had Tezuka not been there to intervene...

I had actually forgotten all about the bitchslap until earlier today when one of my friends who's been marathoning the series mentioned it to me. My only reaction at the time was a wide-eyed, "Hey, that did happen, didn't it?" But, as I've thought about it more... I can't discount the senbatsu arc. Because, really, it's canon. It was the boring arc... the one that made me stop watching for a month or so. But it had it's moments ( ... )

Just to stimulate some conversation... ^^;

I don't think seeing through cultural filters is a bad thing, and besides there's this whole thing about cultural odourlessness that is attributed to many Japanese manga and anime that make it successful outside the Japanese context. I think PoT's one of those series that allows for that, so it's only natural that cultural filters play a role in defining characters for the spectator. (I wonder if it's these cultural filters that make certain characters and pairings popular in some countries as opposed to others??)
