I <3 our Subie, especially in those New England winters. We've had two; a Legacy L sedan (roomy, not very peppy or particularly sippy but safe) and an Impreza Outback Sport (peppier, smaller, incredibly easy to parallel park, awesome trunk).
I have fond memories of driving through snow in a parking lot in Boston, watching a succession of people in big two wheel drive vehicles spin out.
AWD doesn't make you immune to snow, but it's saved me from having to shovel on countless occasions. Just keep the tires and brakes in good condition, and you're good to go.
I agree. The impreza got me through a lot of snowstorms in the wee hours of the morning when I had to get to the hospital before the streets were ploughed.
I don't have a Sedan, I have an Outback. I love it. LOVE LOVE LOVE. It is not giant SUVish. It fit 5 grown-ups and a dog for 4 hours without anyone killing anyone else. It also saved me when some crazy lady lost control over her car and tried to plow into us, instead I zoomed to safety.
