Merry Christmas. I will do so. With the possible exception of the time with my parents, as I cannot control the meals there, and in the spirit of holiday peace I will not make waves. If I can I will eat only the veggies though. :)
I am already verging on ovo-lactarian, and for those products I have chosen organic and cage free local distributors, which I feel is lessening my impact.
I am making excuses, yes, but I still think I have improved. ;p
Yay! It definitely is an improvement! We actually had this discussion on the VB a couple days ago, if lacto/ovo vegetarians are hypocrites. I said no (well we all did because we're extremely nonjudgmental) because every little thing you do to alleviate the suffering helps.
Plus, if you're buying local (and especially if you can go see the operations to make sure they're as cruelty-free as possible), you're doing a lot of good for the environment as well, instead of wasting fuel to transport all those products from who knows where. I want to start eating more locally, but I think that's going to have to wait until the spring when food starts being grown again around here. ;) Ideally I'd love to join a CSA but I'm sure it's a lot of money upfront (as you pay it ALL up front).
I too would love to join a CSA, but the nearest one is almost two hours away! Plus the cost is prohibitive for me too.
I have to learn to like more foods before I could become a healthy vegetarian. I am not so fond of peanuts and soybeans that I can survive without dairy and eggs forever, protein-wise. But I am improving. And I think all my shoes (but not skates) are leather free.
Ok...not until February though (and not because it's the shortest month). If I'm going for more than a week, then I'm going to have to wean down the protein. If I quit cold turkey (literally) then I'll fail. But my credit card balance should hopefully be zero after this month so I'll be able to join weight watchers again and that'll help. I'm also giving the refined sugar the heave ho and it'll take me all of January to get THAT out of my system.
But I'll try.
you know how much I love tofu *cringes*. But I'll need SOMETHING with protein because I keep on dipping down below the anemic border and iron supplements make me sick. So think of an alternative.
Beans, legumes, meat substitutes, fortified soy/rice/nut milks... this question pops up on the veggie board a lot, I'll wait for it to come up again. :o)
