Summary: Gakuto finally pops the question
Rating. PG-y
Stretched out on ‘the awesome couch’ as it was widely referred to Yuushi was paging through his favourite volume of Junjou Romantica while waiting for his little partner to drop by and share whatever was on his mind with him. Next to him was already a tasty fruity drink with his trusty wooden umbrella in it and somewhere in the back Ryou was rummaging through their supplies for something with a bit more bite to it. They may not be a tennis team anymore but they were still a team, a band of brothers and Yuushi had never appreciated it more than after following them to the island.
More than once on his way Gakuto just wanted to turn around. What had come over him that he did this? Gakuto really didn’t know but he definitely didn’t want to be a bigger coward that Eiji. With a deep breath he tried to calm himself down before he entered the man cave. “Hey Ryou”, he called at Shishido and then looked at Yuushi, smiling slightly and insecure. “Hey Yuushi”, he said a bit calmer before he sat down beside his best friend and partner.
“Hey Gakuto.” Smiling in greeting Yuushi closed his book and put it off to the side. Maybe Yukimura would like to come over some time again and discuss the finer points of the newest story arc with him, he was sure the Rikkai head would find it just as interesting as he himself had. “So what brings you here?” Leaning back he slung an arm over the back of the couch and crossed his legs, giving Gakuto his full attention - and a nice closeup view of his bare chest.
Gakuto felt how his cheeks got a bit warmer and could have punched himself for it. That didn’t make it easier at all. And Yuushi’s bare chest didn’t either. “I... uhm I need to talk to you I guess”, he murmured and looked over to where Ryou where. Should he just tell Yuushi while Ryou was in the room? On the other hand. Yuushi and Ryou were very close just like they used to be so he would know it either way in the end. “I... thought about many things and well... I think I should tell you something”, he mumbled and didn’t dare to look at Yuushi.
“Ah?” Sitting up straighter Yuushi leaned forwards to rest his elbows on his knees and gave Gakuto a long look while trying to figure out what his little partner could have possibly to tell him that caused such a display. “What is it Gakuto? You know you can tell me anything.” Reaching over he gave a bony knee a comforting squeeze. “We’re friends.”
Gakuto looked at the hand on his knee before he placed his own over it and interlaced their fingers slightly. “I know... Yuushi is the best friend that ever existed. That’s why I really should tell you”, he sighed and then took his hand away again and turned around so he would sit straight in front of Yuushi. Slowly he lifted his head. “You know I love you. As a friend and as the best partner I could possibly have. But... That’s not everything. There is so much more. I get angry every time I see you with Ann even if I know that’s stupid and I have no right to be angry at her. I didn’t like the turn-the-bottle because I had to see you kissing somebody else. Every time I’m afraid that I loose you to somebody else”, he spoke surprisingly calm but eventually had to lower his head again. “I really love you... not just as a friend, but really...”
“Gakuto...” Listening to the smaller redhead Yuushi’s eyebrows furrowed down before shooting up towards the edge of his hairline. “You’re never going to loose me...” He tried to reassure his partner while rolling the rest of the declaration around his head and trying to figure out what to say in return.
“I know”, Gakuto sighed pulling his legs up to on the couch and wrapping his arms around his knees. “I know that but I’m still afraid of loosing you”, he said. He felt surprisingly calm now that he had told Yuushi what he felt.
“Hey...” Scooting closer Yuushi gently wrapped a comforting arm around his friend’s shoulders. “If nothing else I am always going to be your partner and friend.” He rubbed his hand soothingly over the slender back. “Nothing is ever going to change that.”
So now he had his answer. Yuushi really just saw a friend in him, nothing more. It was okay, at least he now knew. It wasn’t as if he wanted to cry, not at all. “Thanks Yuushi....”, he murmured with a slight, but sad smile. “That... was all... I guess I’ll go back then”, he said and lowered his head again. It was okay
“I’m sorry Gakuto.” Pulling his friend closer Yuushi gave him a firm squeeze. “But I can promise you that it’s not going to change things between us, all right?”
Gakuto let himself be pulled into the hug and closed his eyes. “No... it’s okay. I didn’t expected anything... I just wanted to tell you, because you have the right to know it”, he stated still leaning slightly against Yuushi. He said nothing would change but Gakuto was sure that things would happen. Nothing big but little things that Yuushi probably wouldn’t notice.
Resting his chin on top of dark red hair Yuushi continued to rub his partner’s back. “You probably don’t want to hear that you’re going to find the right person for you....do you?” Honestly he had an entire spiel for this - though it had never been intended to be used outside the school yard when some hopeless girl had gathered all her courage and written him a letter with a bazillion hearts doting every i, t and whatever other letters they could get away with before sealing it with the lip print of a kiss wearing the most expensive lipgloss and slip it into his cubby. “It’s really pretty good.”
Gakuto sighed and let his head hang. “Did you have to say that now?”, he said and backed off to sit on the other side of the couch still wrapping his arms around his knees. “I’ll manage somehow. You don’t have to worry about me”, he said placing his chin on his knees. He would manage. He would get used to the thought that Yuushi might get snatched away from him without a chance for him. Perhaps Yuushi was right and he would find somebody else, though he doubted it. But he wouldn’t tell Yuushi. He didn’t want to worry him.
“I’ll always worry for you Gakuto.” Yuushi’s heart ached as he watched his little partner pull away from him. “You’re my friend.” Reaching over he ruffled red hair with a hopeful smile. “I want to know everything going on in that crazy little head of yours”
No he wouldn’t cry. He couldn’t cry, not now, not here. “I’ll be fine, as I said. And there’s nothing special going on in my head”, he murmured.
“That’s not true.” Creeping closer again Yuushi wrapped his arm around a slender waist and hauled Gakuto into his lap. “But it doesn’t have to be special - just talk to me .”
“It is”, Gakuto insisted and at first wanted to get away from Yuushi but then just let it happen. “And I don’t want to talk!”, he grumbled, didn’t feel like talking at all, rather like doing something really exhausting so he didn’t have to think for some time.
“I know.”Wrapping his arms firmly around the wiry body in his embrace Yuushi rested his chin back on top of Gakuto’s head. “You don’t talk enough - I always have to wonder what is going on in there.” He poked a long finger at Gakuto’s forehead. “It’s not very nice for the partner who loves you as much as I do.”
“Just strange that you always seem to know what I’m thinking anyway”; Gakuto sighed but then stiffened in Yuushi’s arms. “It’s not nice?”; he asked disbelieving, “For a Partner who loves me as you do? You are the one who just dumped me! What should be going on in my head after something like that? I feel horrible okay?! I don’t know if I should cry or smash something. I wished I wouldn’t have told you! I wished I just had continued keeping it as a secret!”, he said almost furious and tried to get out of Yuushi’s arms.
Arms falling away Yuushi blinked as Gakuto scrambled off of his lap. “I’m...sorry?” He offered after a long moment of silence once Gakuto’s accusations had stopped echoing in the cave. “I wish I could give you what you want...I really do....”
“Forget it... Just... forget it okay?”, he said exhausted, “Just try to forget what I have said. It doesn’t matter.”
“Ok....I guess if that’s what you want...” Frowning darkly Yuushi nodded reluctantly, trying not to set off the volatile redhead again. “But it does matter...”
“Yes!.. No!... damn....”, Gakuto was confused and didn’t know what to do anymore. It was his first time confessing and he felt horrible, not knowing what to do after knowing that Yuushi didn’t feel the same. “I don’t know what I want anymore...”
“Lets talk about it.” Yuushi offered, holding out his hand to pull Gakuto back onto the couch. “We’ll figure it out together.” He really didn’t like to see the confused and upset look on a face that should only ever be smugly happy if everything went according to him.
“Why should we? There’s nothing to talk about. I just have to accept the facts. That’s everything”, Gakuto complained but still let himself be pulled back. Or rather he had no strength to fight against Yuushi pulling him.
Tugging his partner down Yuushi twisted the problem around inside his head. In a way Gakuto was right - unless something changed his little partner would have to accept the fact that his feelings were not returned, something that obviously and understandably upset the smaller redhead. And all he really wanted was to be loved - was that so bad? After all everybody was looking for the same thing and who was he to say that his own quest was more important than that of his partner. He had the power to take all the upset resting on those thin shoulders away...and all he had to do was to give Gakuto what he wanted. Clearing his throat he gently caught the pointy chin with his fingers and tipped it up, meeting stormy blue eyes as he leaned down in turn to touch his lips to those pouty ones of his partner.
Gakuto was startled as he suddenly felt Yuushi’s lips upon his own. What was that? Yuushi had made clear that he didn’t love him and now he kissed him? Did he really think Gakuto was so stupid? Forcefully he pushed the taller boy away and stared at him with an half hurt and half angry look. “What kind of game are you playing Yuushi? Why do you kiss me when you just told me that you’re felling nothing for me?”, he asked cool, not knowing what he should think.
“Gakuto..” Being pushed away was obviously not what the darker half of the pair had expected as he looked up in surprise, frowning at the emotions he could easily read in his petite friend. “Isn’t that what you wanted?” He would stay with Gakuto, give him as much attention and affection as he wanted and the little redhead would never have to worry about losing him.
“I want you to love me not to kiss me because I’m depressed. If you’re just doing that because I feel pity for me than I don’t want this. You really think I could want you give up yourself just so I’m pleased?”, he asked disbelieving.
“You’re my friend...and my partner.” Yuushi shrugged, curling his hands in his lap. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”
“So.... you’re telling me you would play my boyfriend just because I threaten you with crying and throwing a tantrum?”, Gakuto asked shocked.
“Sure?” Reaching up Yuushi smoothed his hand over blue hair and shrugged again, looking a little confused on why that was such a surprise to Gakuto. “If it makes you happy.”
The sound of flesh hitting flesh resounded through the cave as Gakuto slapped Yuushi right in the face before he stood up and clenched his fists. “You’re an Idiot Yuushi! A huge Idiot! I love you but that you really believe I could be happy if you force yourself to be my boyfriend just so I get what I want, then you haven’t understood anything. I HATE YOU!”; He yelled and just turned around to run away. He never had thought that Yuushi could be such an idiot.
