When: Today/This evening.
Where: Top of the Island
Summary: Hiyoshi is an idiot and forgets an important date. Kirihara is a bigger idiot by default. Some sappy crap towards the end. Shut your mouth, Marui Bunta.
Hiyoshi better have loved him. Big time.
Kirihara stood by the middle of camp waiting for his boyfriend to meet up with him. Six months was a big deal…or at least he figured Hiyoshi would think so and want to do something for it. Kirihara would never admit that he’d been thinking about the upcoming date for the past week and the only reason he was doing something for it was because if he didn’t Hiyoshi would have been disappointed and he just didn’t want to deal with an over emotional boyfriend.
Or so was the lie Rikkai’s youngest told himself.
The tent waiting at the top of the island (a place they could see the starts the best) wasn’t something he’d spent forever thinking about, it wasn’t a big deal or anything. The beers and makings for dinner in his pack weren’t either. It was no big deal, Kirihara thought, shifting the bag from one shoulder to the other.
Marui would totally call him a sap for even acknowledging that he had an anniversary with anyone. (Because celebrating the anniversary of the first time you played on the Rikkai regulars team was totally acceptable instead - Nobody needed to know about that or that fact that he still had the slip of paper his Senpai had saved aside for him to try out. Framed).
“How long does it take to pack a bag?” The green eyed devil accused as soon as he saw a familiar figure approaching him.
"I didn't realize you were in such a hurry." Was the calm reply as Hiyoshi walked towards his boyfriend. The last half year had done wonders to make him more relaxed in dealing with Kirihara's outbursts. "It would have been faster if you had told me what I was packing for." Since he'd had to guess Hiyoshi's bag now contained everything the young man could think of that might be needed, including his telescope, the book on constellations Kirihara had gotten him, half the remaining content of their first aid box and finally half a dozen condoms and some lube.
Kirihara shrugged off Hiyoshi’s complaint back to him not wanting to say something corny like, ’It’s a surprise.’ or whatever. “You brought cookies, right?” He held his hand out to the other, an expectant look in his green eyes coupled with the impenitence in his tone was used to offset his nerves.
If Hiyoshi laughed when they got to the top of the hill he swore he’d kick him off it.
“Sure.” They were in his bag...probably. Hiyoshi pushed the question out of his mind and took Kirihara’s hand. Strong, calloused fingers were warm against his own and a comfortable, familiar presence. “You can have them when we get there.” He really would have to thank Kirihara-san for sending him the cookies as bargaining chip when they got back. “Lets go.”
“Good.” Kirihara’s fingers tightened around the ones in his grip as he pulled Hiyoshi in the direction of one of the many trails that the island’s inhabitants had managed to carve out throughout the island. This one would take them as far as the tennis courts, from there it was just a climb to the top. “You didn’t eat any of them, right?” He asked, only half kidding. In the Kirihara family, at least between his sister and himself, those cookies were like gold. Gold worth bodily injury if need be.
The make-shift courts were in view now and empty, thankfully. Kirihara didn’t want to deal with any body’s bull shit, he just wanted to get past and get up to the spread he’d rigged for Hiyoshi.
“I might have had one for breakfast..?” Hiyoshi offered somewhat warily before glancing at the courts. “If you want to play tennis you should have told me so. I didn’t bring my racket.” He frowned and tugged at Kirihara’s hand.
Kirihara stopped dead in his tracks to turn around and give Hiyoshi a small glare. “I guess its okay for you to have one.” The smaller man was never the best at sharing, even if he was only half-serious.
“And we’re not playing tennis, baka. Do I look like I have my racket?” In fact, Kirihara had nothing on him at that moment besides the clothing on his back of course. Green eyes focused on the treeline around the tennis courts for a moment, trying to remember which direction he’d even made their set up in before he decided as long as they kept heading up, they’d hit it. “This way.”
They walked at least ten minutes up before Kirihara paused again, trying to find his bearings and not loose his temper all at the same time. Just when he was about to stop and complain that they should have found what he was looking for they breached the tree line again.
There was a tent, haphazardly set up and a few blankets spread out before a small fire pit. The island didn’t provide much as far as comforts went and Kirhara wasn’t really the best at surprises but he had tried. Small pieces of torn up colored paper were hung around the small camp site...the demons version of decorations. It was pitiful, but he looked pretty damn proud of himself. “See, not tennis.” He crossed his arms over his chest with a cocky smile plastered over his features. Hiyoshi was gonna be so pleased.
“It’s not tennis.” Hiyoshi agreed, honestly surprised at what Kirihara seemed to have arranged for them. Now if only he could figure out WHY, that would be really good. “That’s really nice Akaya.” He squeezed Kirihara’s hand, recognizing the look of his boyfriend expecting to be praised. “That must have been a lot of trouble getting everything up here and set up...”
“Yeah well...” The cocky smile faded into a true one the moment he realized Hiyoshi seemed pleased. “Given what its for and all...” His cheeks were already starting to tint a slight pink at the thought of him being cheesy enough to even want to do something for their anniversary.
For a moment Hiyoshi hoped Kirihara would actually SAY what it was for, but the blush on his boyfriend’s face made it clear it was something with a somewhat romantic background. And still he had no idea what exactly the occasion was. The only choice he now had was to play along and hope his boyfriend didn’t clue in to it. “Thank you Akaya.” Leaning over he pressed a kiss to a rosy cheek. “It’s very sweet.”
Kirihara bit into his own lip to suppress the stupid grin that wanted to spread across his face. He was obviously the best boyfriend, ever. “Yeah, well...whatever don’t get all sappy on me or anything.” He finally untangled their fingers and went over to the bedspread he had laid out so that he could start the fire. “I knew you’d like this sort of stuff.” He shuffled around, sitting back when the fire finally lit.
“No worry.” He would have to know what in the world they were actually doing here to get sappy about it. “Anything I can do?” He sat down next to the other boy and watched him, trying to discern the reason behind it all. It wasn’t his birthday, he was sure Kirihara knew to that, it wasn’t Kirihara’s birthday obviously or the other boy wouldn’t have gone to all this trouble, besides his birthday was in summer. It had to have something to do with their relationship...but this time last year they were still hating each other’s guts so what in all the world could it be?
“Stay out of my way, this is part of your gift.” Kirihara shooed Hiyoshi off away from the fire pit and the food he was starting to pull out from a cooler he’d carried up the hill earlier. How they’d managed to not kill each other in the six months they’d lasted was a wonder sometimes. Kirihara supposed it was because when they did squabble it was never really that serious unless he was actually mad which had only happened a few times now. Green eyes lifted to glace over at Hiyoshi for a moment before he let out a soft “Che..”
“”Ok.” Shrugging out of his backpack Hiyoshi used the time to put away some of the things he had brought with him. “We’ll have the cookies for dessert then?” Sitting back he watched the other, catching his sideway glance and raising a curious eyebrow. “What?”
“N-nothing!” Kirihara quickly protested being caught staring at his boyfriend and turned back to the make-shift hot pot he was stirring. “And yeah, cookies for dessert.” He reached up pushing hair out of his eyes before he sat back to let the soup cook. “What were you looking at anyways?” He crawled over next to Hiyoshi to give him a soft punch in the arm, trying to turn the tables on him.
“Just my boyfriend.” Hiyoshi countered, bumping his shoulder against Kirihara. “Who is amazingly sweet. Must be all those cookies and sweets you always stuff yourself with.” He smiled then admitted. “I had no idea you were even planning anything.”
“I’m not sweet!” Kirihara’s arms came up immediately to cross over his chest in protest. “And I only did all this because...” He paused, arms loosening a little as he thought about it. Well, he knew why he did it, but to say anything about it out loud was just too much for Rikkai’s resident demon.
“And why shouldn’t I have done something. It’s not like it’s not normal or anything!!” He was on the defense for his pride as a man who wasn’t a sap or sweet or any of those cheesy stupid romantic things. He was sweet though and he had done it with the hopes to make Hiyoshi happy. He glared at the other man for making him feel like that before he leaned over and kissed him quickly. “You’re an idiot.”
“Of course.” Hiyoshi agreed, still clueless what he was actually agreeing to. “But I suppose I’m your idiot, no?” He tugged Kirihara back in to kiss him properly, lips sliding together deliciously. “I don’t mind you being sweet now and then. It’s one of the things that are just mine.” He informed his boyfriend after finally releasing him.
Kirihara rolled his eyes. “Don’t get to used to it or anything.” He mumbled, making his way over to the fire again to make up two small bowls for them. Maybe in another six months he’d think about doing something like this again, only he hoped they were off the island so that he could actually take Hiyoshi somewhere cool.
“I can’t promise that.” Hiyoshi teased with a soft chuckle. “It’s so nice.” Stretching his legs out in front of him he kicked his shoes off and wiggled his toes. Seemed like they were going to be here for quite a while, best to get comfortable.
“We’ll try at least.” Kirhara handed him half a coconut husk filled with soup. “I guess before you do though I should give you your gift or whatever.” The tips of his ears were already turning pink as he turned to fish a small package out of his bag. He’d attempted to wrap whatever it was up in a big banana leaf he’d found. The gift was quickly thrust at Hiyoshi before he turned back to pour some of the soup for himself and grab a couple of the beers he’d swiped from the man cave.
“Don’t expect much or anything.” He shoveled food into his mouth, hiding behind the makeshift bowl as he watched his boyfriend.
Taking the banana leaf Hiyoshi bit his bottom lip as he glanced quickly at Kirihara before carefully unwrapping it. It was one thing to feign knowledge during a date but a present...he thought feverishly whether he should have gotten Kirihara something as well. “Akaya....” He paused midway through peeling away the last bit of the green waxy wrapping paper. “I have to tell you something..”
“What?” Kirihara asked looking up from his soup, some of it dribbling down his chin. “You ate more then one cookie, didn’t you!?”
“Wha...no.” Hiyoshi shook his head and reached over to distractedly wipe the dribble of soup from Kirihara’s cheek. “It’s not about the cookies.” He gave his damp finger a look then sighed softly and popped it into his mouth to suck the soup from it.
“Good. I would have killed you.” He watched Hiyoshi for a moment, almost entranced by him sucking the soup from his finger before he realized he should probably be worried about what it was Hiyoshi had to say if he wasn’t admitting to cookie-theft.
“What then?” Kirihara let the brief thought of the words Hiyoshi was speaking sounded an awful lot like what one of the girls had said in one of the dramas his stupid sister had been sniffling about in the living room right before he left on the cruise right before she dumped her boyfriend. He tensed for a moment, brows furrowing as he tried to forget that thought. “What?”
Taking a deep breath Hiyoshi steeled himself for his boyfriend’s reaction to his admission, his back straightening automatically. “I don’t have a present for you.” He held his breath for a moment.
Kirihara stared at Hiyoshi for a good minute, head cocked to the side.
It would have done him good to stop and think in that moment rather then just act.
Normally he would have called him an idiot and made remarks about how he was a much better boyfriend then anyone else in the world -- All in jest of course. “You don’t?” Was all that he managed out, green eyes regarding the shuffling boy across from him.
Was he seriously breaking up with him?!
“Give that back.” He reached over and grabbed the wrapped banana leaf from Hiyoshi’s hands the small seashell ring he’d crafted falling from its folds to settle between them. The flare of a blush spread to his cheeks once again as he swiped it up. He wasn’t gonna let someone who was going to break up with him have the satisfaction of getting something from him. “And give me back Momma’s cookies!”
“I...” All Hiyoshi could do was blink as Kirihara snatched first his present from him and then the ring that had fallen from it. Was it really so bad? He mentally kicked himself not only for forgetting but also for admitting it, ducking his head so he didn’t have to watch Kirihara’s reaction to his next admission. “I...I don’t know what we’re celebrating...”
Kirihara was just about ready to start in on Hiyoshi again about the cookies all to save his stupid pride when Hiyoshi’s next admission took the words out of his mouth. “You don’t?” He glared a little harder at Hiyoshi only to cover up the stinging in the back of his eyes.
He wasn’t focusing on the thought that Hiyoshi was breaking up with him anymore but he still didn’t feel very good. He looked down at the leaf he’d thrown to the side and squeezed his hand around the ring in his palm. His pride screamed at him just to not even mention their six months, that way he wouldn’t look like some love-sick loser.
“Che...I guess I can’t be mad at you. We’re not really celebrating anything.” He lied reaching up to rub his fisted hand by his temple to ease the ache across his brow. “Besides, you’re just an idiot anyway so I’ll forgive you just this once if you get me a cookie.” The mophead swiped his arm across his face before straightening up again.
“Akaya...” Looking back up Hiyoshi caught Kirihara’s wrist. “Don’t lie, please. I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you somehow. I won’t ever forget any other dates, I promise. So please tell me.” The blond pleaded with his words and his eyes as he tugged Kirihara closer. “You can have all the cookies too.”
“We got together in September.” He provided. “And I want the cookies back at the hut too.” Kirihara settled against Hiyoshi secretly relieved that his over active imagination had been very wrong. He tucked his chin over the slope of Hiyoshi’s shoulder and took in a deep breath. “Baka...”
“I know...it was shortly before your birthday..” Curling his arm around Kirihara’s waist Hiyoshi only nodded to the demand for all the cookies. “So...it was six months ago...” Drawing back a little understanding dawned in light brown eyes. “It’s half a year...?”
“You tell me.” Kirihara shrugged trying to act indifferent to the whole situation. “It’s not like its a big deal.” It was. “I mean I’m good at everything that I do, so relationships should be no exception so it’s not like we really need to do anything for it.” He covered. “Besides only dumb girls really celebrate things like that anyway, right?” As he spoke he felt his cheeks getting hotter and hotter.
Kirihara was a terrible liar, almost as bad as Hiyoshi was.
“Here.” He handed the ring he’d been holding over to Hiyoshi. “I found this.”
“Thank you.” Taking the ring from Kirihara Hiyoshi studied it curiously, his mouth going a little dry as he thought about what it might mean. “Want to see if it’ll fit?”
“It fit me so it should fit you.” Kirihara stuffed his hands in his lap and looked over at Hiyoshi. “You can try it on if you want, its yours now.” The other boy missed the point entirely that Hiyoshi probably wanted him to slip it on for him.
“Ok.” Turning the ring slowly Hiyoshi waited a moment before slipping it on. “Fits perfectly.” He flexed his fingers to see how it looked. “What do you think?” He presented his hand to Kirihara.
Kirihara let out a soft tsk and reached forward to pull Hiyoshi’s hand closer for inspection. “I did a pretty good job on it, huh?” Green eyes lifted to look into lighter colored brown ones with a small smile that faded into a playful glare daring him to say otherwise.
“I guess so.” A little smile played over Hiyoshi’s lips before he leaned in and pressed a slow kiss to boyfriend’s. “Happy six month bi-anniversary.” He murmured against the junior demon’s lips. “I love you.”
“You better. You’re not gonna find a better boyfriend out there.” Kirihara was happy to kiss back, and happy that his pride was spared. “Maybe you can reach my level of awesome-boyfriend status and make up forgetting it starting now.” The dark haired boy gave Hiyoshi a small slow smile that told him that he wasn’t mad, but that he did expect him to do something.
“How about I give you a backrub after dinner then?” Thumbing over his ring Hiyoshi offered it with a little smirk. “To repay you for all your hard work, my super awesome boyfriend.”
“It sounds like a good start.” Kirihara reached over and tapped Hiyoshi’s ring finger. “Does it fit there?” Determined green eyes stared over at Hiyoshi, the heat of a blush flushing over his features again. Not that anyone on the island didn’t know it but Hiyoshi was his and he was extremely possessive and over protective when he decided something was important enough or worth the effort.
Hiyoshi was both.
God he was a sap.
“It should...” For some reason Hiyoshi felt hot blood pour into the top layer of skin over his cheeks and nose, flushing dimly as he slipped the ring on to the finger Kirihara had indicated. “It’s a tight fit...might be hard to get it off again.” He commented as he gave it a tentative wiggle.
“Good.” Kirihara leaned forward again to kiss Hiyoshi once more. “Don’t take it off. Ever.”
