To the best of my recollections, convents served several purposes in the 18thC. They were indeed for the pius. They were also tantamount to young women's boarding schools, until marriages could be arranged. And, they could also be detention centers, places for the unruly and the misguided to be shown a straighter path.
So, into which scenario did Angelica fit? Was she trying to convince Jack or herself? Was the cross at her neck symbolizing lost hopes or wishful thinking?
