After browsing through this bored and others I've come to the conclusion that EVERYONE should read a book called The Price of Freedom. Its a back story novel (yes novel)  to Jack, Teague, Beckett, and a little bit of Barbossa.

I read it over the summer and it gives great insight to Jack and Beckett (mainly) but to the inner workings of shipwreck ( Read more... )

I thought it was an enjoyable read. As you say, the author did a considerable amount of research and has gone a long way to bring the flavor of the sea into the story. Of course, the backstory didn't entirely fit what I would have written, but then I'm not the author here. It's her version (with Disney and other powers that be looking over her shoulder).

The author went a long way to incorporate explanations for a number of the little details that make up Jack, from the kohl around his eyes to the sash at his belt, and many things in between. She has expressed a bit of frustration that she wasn't clued in on what was to come on OST, because she could have easily incorporated that as well. But be that as it may, it's a fun read if you're any kind of a Jack fan.

I'm actually sorta glad she hadn't incorporated OST because Esmeralda could have easily become Angelica and personally I like Esmeralda a whole lot more.

I particularly like the bits about Beckett my self and Wicked Wench/Black Pearl. Not to mention shipwreck life.

would you say its canon or fanon? I think its more canon because Disney and the writers let her publish it.

She had said that she could have made Esmeralda into Angelica (although the backstories seem radically different)had she known, but why not have more than one woman in Jack's life?

I was particularly taken by the "nauticalness" of it all, something that has been woefully missing from a good deal of the fanfic. Too often the Black Pearl is relegated to being just a backdrop rather than an integral part of Jack's life. The Shipwreck life didn't interest me all that much, but then I've never been as taken by it as many have.

I'd have to say canon, because it is "official" as you indicate. The book was written under very close scrutiny and all the way to the top, if you get my meaning. The author is also very adamant that she avoids any fanfic sites either for POTC or the other venues for which she has written (and a lengthy list it is)just because she fears inadvertantly repeating something.

too true, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if Esmeralda had been Angelica. Though whats with Jack and Spanish pirate ladies? ahah kink?

I loved the nautical stuff as well, I just liked the shipwreck stuff more because my RPG is based around it *shrug*

I love that its official :)

its a bit slow in the beginning and then picks up speed near the end though, that is the only fault I've ever found.

Okay, I need to go find this book. I heard they were going to publish a novel, but then I didn't hear anything else about it. It's a regular book, right? Not a kids' book?

Thanks for the recommendation! I nearly had heart failure when I came across the book at my local bookstore and realized what it was--an authorized, full-length, "adult" (not for kids like most of the other tie ins were) novel about a younger Jack. I have't bought it yet, and I was debating whether I should wait for the paperback, but I may go take advantage of Amazon's discount now that I've got another fan's word that it's good...
