Jumping on the pimping bandwagon:

I've created a new community, potc_universe, for the purpose of promoting historical detail in POTC fanfic. If you're like me and you squee over things like the proper names of sails or lice-ridden characters, come on over! You can share links to historical resources, ask questions or start a discussion.

I have to say, as the picky and bitchy Virgo that I am, nothing makes me crazier than those little niggling details. It's a curse that every Virgo bears...and all of you Virgos out there know exactly what I'm talking about.

I was a history major in college--back in 19....well, never mind, and have sailed for over 25 years (and still learning). That's just enough knowledge to know I know very little.

It seems the biggest stress in writing is often trying to find that one little detail that you need and have no idea where to start. The Google page cringes everytime it sees me coming.

Thank you for such a great idea! Those of us who have to build the watch to be able to know what time it is can now live a happy life!

Well, I'm Libra, but I find myself getting knocked out of stories by a modern turn of phrase or other things that are just wrong. And I totally know what you mean about building the watch - when I started making 18th century clothing, I immediately set about trying to make my own lace. :P

This is a great idea -- heh, I come from a family of sea-faring traditions but can barely operate a bloody rowing boat meself... Then, it doesn't much help if you know the names of all those ship-ish gadgets only in Finnish :p English dictionaries help you just halfway there...

(Though the lice I'm happy to leave ashore, at least when writing the smutty scenes ;) )
