“Close the door, Miss Swann.”

James pronounced her name with his usual bitterness and contempt. Nonetheless, Elizabeth did as she was told. With the door closed, darkness descended on her eyes with an almost palpable pressure. The only sound was her heart thudding in her ears. Wherever he was, James made no sound.

“Not nervous, are we?”

Elizabeth jumped at the voice in her ear and gave a small oath. James was right behind her. Elizabeth laughed nervously. “Of course not,” she retorted, “I know you. You’d never press your advantage …would you?”

No answer. Elizabeth swallowed uneasily. “Would you?” she asked again of the oppressive darkness. A droplet of sweat trailed down her back.

“Wouldn’t you deserve it?” he asked. He still hadn’t touched her, but he was close enough that his breath warmed her ear and made the hairs on the back of her neck rise.

“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.” Elizabeth regretted her flippant words immediately. Strong hands closed around her wrists and forced them behind her back.

“Seven minutes is not nearly long enough for you to make a proper apology,” James growled at her, “But why don’t you do your best.”

He let her go with one hand and unbuttoned her britches. She squirmed, her loyalty to Will in a battle with the growing warmth between her thighs.

“This will go much faster with your assistance, Miss Swann. After all, you’re in here of your own free will, and I’ll not do anything that hasn’t been done to you, and with less skill, by at least one other man.” He relaxed his grip on her other arm and pushed her britches over her hips.

“James, I-I have something to tell you,” she said shakily as she stepped out of her britches. “I’m still a virgin.”

There was a pause, then a deep and agonized sigh.

He’s not as far fallen as he pretends, Elizabeth thought.

James turned her around gently. “May I kiss you then, Elizabeth?” Now he sounded exactly the same as he had the day he had proposed to her: hopeful, tentative, and devoid of malice.

Relief flooded through her. “Why, of course, James,” she said. She parted her lips, waiting. His hands left her shoulders and moved to her bare hips, sending a warning to her mind: was he just manipulating her with his apparent change of heart? Too late to worry as she heard movement and then-“Oh!…What are you-what are you … doing?” she breathed.

“I never said on the mouth, Miss Swann.”

Outside the closet, silence reigned as the watch ticked down to seven minutes. When thirty seconds remained, the silence was pierced by a scream: “James-James-James…you’re a BAD MAN!!!” Everyone exchanged an incredulous glance. After a moment, the door opened, and Norrington swaggered out and closed the door behind him. He wiped his mouth on the back of his hand. “Who’s next?” he asked as he smirked at their shocked faces.
