I love the tantalising sense of development in this. So much UST, even if we don't see Jack, and the scene with Groves was particularly delicious. I don't know if you intend to continue this, but I would be very curious to see what happens when James catches Jack. ;)

A most enjoyable read.

I'm glad you liked it! I might do a sequel, but I owe sequels/next installments for three or four other things already, so I probably don't get to promise sequels to anything else until I finish one of them.

Now that was very interesting. I really like how you made this thing work. And how you write Norrington. Absolutely perfect!

Thank you! I was tempted to make the pairing label on this one "Jack/James, sort of, but really James vs. his own libido."

Your James is such an adorable blend of spiky and vulnerable. Right from the first para:
He eyes her for a long moment before addressing her, both in an effort to encourage her to loiter elsewhere and in an effort to determine the most appropriate way of addressing her.
And so polite with it :)

I love the way this builds, with little pauses that make him wonder if it's over, as the attempts to set hi up with someone get more and more outrageous, and threaten direr social/professional fallout. He's going to have to bed Jack, if only to save his reputation!

At least he did the sensible thing not acquiring irons. What would Groves have thought then?!?

But even while I'm giggling, you're breaking my heart for the poor commodore:
It's still hard for him to picture her except as part of a background against which Elizabeth shines ( ... )

"Spiky and vulnerable" sounds about right.

At least he did the sensible thing not acquiring irons. What would Groves have thought then?!?

The mind boggles. Poor James!

Oh my, there's so much I wanted to say while reading that I don't even know where to start, and I've forgotten half of it anyway by now. :P But I absolutely adored this. You captured the essence of James, I think, all his repressed longings. A truly brilliant characterization of him. And I liked how you could make every character real, how you could make me believe they had a life outside this story. And you could capture Jack too, even in his absence, marvelous work with that. And the way you built it up, always a bit more daring on Jack's part, always a bit more tempting, and harder to bear for James. And the part with Teddy positively hurt my heart. I think there Jack might have gone a bit too far.

"It can only end in the dirty questions of preferment and what each of them would do with the weapons they held over each other's careers." Wonderful line, one of many many wonderful ones.

Thank you for this very much. It was truly worth reading.

Thanks so much! Jack is tormenting the poor man, and I'm sure enjoying himself tremendously in the process. I'm glad you liked it!

You have captured Norrington so well in this! And the humor of Jack, his gifts are priceless, each one tempting James a bit more.

I was reminded of a cat teasing and playing with a mouse, not hungry enough to kill it but enjoying the game.

I wonder what Jack would have done if James had taken him up on one of those gifts?

Thank you! Jack's having fun in a not-particularly-nice way, yes. (And I'm not sure what he'd do if James took him up on any of it -- other than be both smug and maybe a tiny bit disappointed.)
