Over the last month and a half, Sheila and I have gotten in and watched all five seasons of "The Wire". We had never seen a single episode, but had heard wonderful things about it.
They were all wrong.

My favorite characters were Lester, Omar, Dukie, Prez, Colvin, McNulty ... hell, too many to name.
Season two's probably my favorite as well. I'm not so sure that ties into the whole "the show was too black for a white audience" idea, but is more because it touched on the blue-collar or no-collar roots of my family and on organized labor.
Though I'd rank this show above THE SHIELD, personally. And yeah, CRACKER (U.K.) is for me the other pinnacle of "cop shows." (I put that in quotes because none of them was really a cop show: THE WIRE was about the death of the American dream, THE SHIELD was about notions of masculinity in the 21st century and CRACKER was about the death of the soul.)
