Over the last month and a half, Sheila and I have gotten in and watched all five seasons of "The Wire". We had never seen a single episode, but had heard wonderful things about it.

They were all wrong.

It's better than just wonderful, it's fantastic!

Amen brother. The Wire is one of the best TV shows ever. I have the whole series on DVD and have watched it several times. EVen other good shows like The Sopranos had the occasional clinker of an episode, but every episode of The Wire is gold.

I thought the education season was the weakest, but I agree with you and Al, one of the best TV shows ever. I thought the wrapup was particularly well done, something that many shows strive for but so many fall short of.

Glad you enjoyed it.

My favorite characters were Lester, Omar, Dukie, Prez, Colvin, McNulty ... hell, too many to name.

Season two's probably my favorite as well. I'm not so sure that ties into the whole "the show was too black for a white audience" idea, but is more because it touched on the blue-collar or no-collar roots of my family and on organized labor.

Though I'd rank this show above THE SHIELD, personally. And yeah, CRACKER (U.K.) is for me the other pinnacle of "cop shows." (I put that in quotes because none of them was really a cop show: THE WIRE was about the death of the American dream, THE SHIELD was about notions of masculinity in the 21st century and CRACKER was about the death of the soul.)

My friend has been telling me for years to watch that. I think I might have season 1 on DVD somewhere.
