I'm sick of romantic!Snape, and rich!Snape. I'm sick of secretlybeautiful!Snape. And I'm also sick of Really-on-Dumbledores-side-he-asked-me-to-kill-him-honest!Snape. Especially when the above is served with a helping of wangst and Snape is crying silent silver tears and cutting himself. I like Snape because he a jerk, because he is self-serving, ( Read more... )

But isn't the purpose of this group a place to rant about stupid fandom things?

Wait? How do see that? He's just a Potions teacher. While he's good, so's Slughorn. If he wasn't good he wouldn't have the job. Snape isn't brillant, he's smart I'll give him that, but he's no genius.
Besides, he's a known Death Eater spy. Normal wizards aren't going to hire him because: He's a Death Eater. Death Eaters (pre-GoF) wouldn't have hired him because they thought he betrayed them. Which by the would have lowered his life expecpancy considerably, outside of Hogwarts and its enchantments he would have survived as long as a jelly-fish in a blast furance.

Mmmm well, Trelawny was kept because of the prophecy, Hagrid was kept because... he'd Hagrid and the author likes him.
Lockhart becasue no one else would take the job. As for Binns, Dumbledore has never gotten rid of Peeves who is a menace so he get rid a teacher
who?s just.

I just don?t think Snape is a genius. Genius is a very rare and special thing.

Permission to shout hooray? HOORAY!

While I agree with the general idea that there's more to Snape's apparant treachery than meets the eye (is anything that simple in the Harry Potter books?), I'm fed up of this 'Snape is the true hero of the series!' shite.

What the possibility of Snape being basically good will prove is that sometimes people on 'the good side' are utter bastards. It won't mean that Snape is a pure and noble man, a tragic sufferer of stolen glory and a victim of the bias of nasty, arrogant Harry. There is only so much bias a boy can have. Or was Trevor the toad biased, too, when he thought Snape was willing to kill him as an example of Neville's lousy potion-making? I suppose Snape was offering the wisdom of harsh reality when he insulted Hermione about her teeth? Snape is a bitter, unpleasant bully. He was a victim, it's true, but that doesn't give him a permission slip to be an arsehole to everybody, and especially not to the young people he's supposed to be teaching.

And I like Snape, same as you. I really ( ... )

You have hit the nail on the head. I was reading back through the 'discussion' and most has gone straight over my head. But, this is the Snape I enjoy, he doesn't need to be glorified to be interesting.

Not all characters need to be genuis, good looking, multi-gallionaires to be good characters, that you want to read about.

I’ve never made Snape beautiful, I like him the way he is - rude, ugly and obnoxious. Doesn’t mean we (us writers) can’t have a little fun along the way. Most of my OCs want to wash his hair and get him to use whitening toothpaste.

Not many posts on how ‘rich’ he is. I don’t buy that and word on it, but he is in a job where his board and lodging is taken care of and can save most of his stipend. Saying that, I’m now going to contradict myself. I’ve just had him buying up most of Spinner’s End and surrounding land (to get those Muggles to leave him alone) and have a very generous offer from a property developer.

I’ve read some excellent stories, which explore all of the facets and do them well. All in all, I think it’s not what is written as how well it is written. Who says jerks can’t be romantic? But I agree it’s very much a no-no on an emo-cutting Snape.
