Day 20

He talks in his sleep. It’s fucking adorable. He’d probably kill me if he heard this too. I should probably figure out how to delete stuff on this. Hm, aw, fuck, shit that’s not rig-

---

“I hope your plan involves something more interesting than just staring at me till I submit.”

Submit.

Submit.

The word wouldn’t leave Adam alone, even after he’d left Tommy alone in that hall. It bounced around in his already busy brain and it would crop up in the middle of another conversation and all of the sudden he’d think about Tommy submitting. How could one simple word be so relentless? Adam had never been into BDSM but he sure as hell couldn’t deny that he liked putting the words ‘Tommy’ and ‘submission’ together in the same sentence. That really shouldn’t turn him on. It really should be something that bothered him. But it didn’t. And as he waited in the infirmary hall, he had to consider why.

Maybe it was the triumph aspect of the whole thing that he enjoyed. The moment the word passed Tommy’s pretty pink lips, all Adam could think about was making him submit. Okay, so yeah, he knew he was a toppy bitch but whoa, come on now. He’d never been like that. So it had to be something else, like the triumph aspect. Since they’d spoken in the ships cockpit the day previous, a challenge had been hanging in the air between them. It was over something stupid, sure, but most challenges were. Adam just wanted to be the winner and if he could make Tommy submit then that would make him the winner.

But maybe it was something else. Tommy had been MIA for a while there the day previous and that had bothered Adam a lot more than it should have because Adam was SO not obsessing over the too-sexy-for-his-own-good blond bombshell of a technician. So not obsessing. So what if he wondered what Tommy was thinking. The kid was like a closed book and Adam was good at reading people but Tommy was a difficult fucking nut to crack. So maybe if Adam succeeded in making Tommy submit it would show what Tommy is really feeling or thinking. Like…. If he was interested in Adam or something. Sure sure, you’re not supposed to mix work and pleasure but Adam was never good at keeping to that rule.

So what was it if it wasn’t all that? It wasn’t like he was dying to throw Tommy down and have his way with him all caveman like. He knew damn well that he was a romantic at heart which meant he’d rather wine, dine and woo Tommy… THEN throw him down and have his way with him.

Perhaps he was just thinking about it too much. After all, submit was just a word. It had sexual connotations but a word was only as powerful as you allow it to be. Was he allowing it to be a sexual word? There were plenty of definitions of that one stupid word that had absolutely nothing to do with bondage or sex or anything else. Yeah, he was just thinking about it too much. WAY too much.

This conclusion made Adam drop his head forward and groan, rubbing through his hair.

“Dude, don’t freak out. It’s just so shots.” Neil: ever the comforting one.

Rather than really explain what was bothering him, he just made an agreeable noise and sat back, letting out a long breath. He was next up after Mallory who was in there now. She’d been in for awhile, and Adam was only slightly nervous about that. He hadn’t been kidding when he’d said he had a thing about shots. He wasn’t scared per say but everyone has their irrational anxieties. His just happened to be pretty much anything related to hospitals. And dentists. Fuck dentists.

And when the hell was Tommy going to come? He wouldn’t be so much of a douche that he’d back out after agreeing. Sure, it might have been a bit of a coerced agreement but he’d still said yes. And he knew he’d said yes. He’d be cheating if he backed out now. He didn’t know him that well though so maybe he was the type to pull crap like that. He’d certainly been a pain in the ass when they’d first met. Now that Adam thought about it, though, it hadn’t been that long since they’d first met. What… like less than a week. It felt like so much more since they saw each other nearly every day. Fuck, he didn’t know Tommy at all. He would have to fix this and not by backing his technician up against a wall and touching him stupid.

“Mr. Lambert?”

“Hm?” He looked up then at the smiling nurse who was holding a small clip pad and waiting for him. She was holding a door open for him, directing him. He stood and let out a long breath, glancing over his shoulder to see where Tommy was coming in. Why everyone thought that the person they were waiting for would come in at just the last moment he didn’t know but he was looking and he was left disappointed. No Tommy. Damn.

Turning back to the nurse he smiled pleasantly and followed her through the small hall way where his vitals were taken. Temperature, blood pressure, height, weight (fuck scales), etcetera. The common banal tests of the doctor’s office before he was shown into a small room where he’d be given his vaccines. He sat down in the chair next to the bed with the crinkly paper on it and waited. Once he’d looked at all the things in the room he rapidly grew bored, his foot tapping on the floor. This was probably why Mallory had taken so long.

When he heard footsteps outside his exam room he sat up and smiled to the doctor who came in to greet him. The doc was followed by someone else, probably a nurse or something, but Adam couldn’t get a good look because the doctor was a big dude and you know, it was rude not to make eye contact when meeting someone for the first time.

“Good afternoon Mr. Lambert. My name is Dr. Weiss. I hope you’re doing well.”

“I am, thank you. How are you?”

“Oh, good, good, can’t complain. Now I hear you’re heading out to the black on an exploration trip?”

“Yes, I’m doing work for my graduation thesis.” A flash of blond caught his eye from the nurse but the nurse was turned away from him so he couldn’t get a better look. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary anyways, they were just dressed in their normal bleached white scrubs with that little cloth cap that tied behind their heads. Nothing out of the ordinary.

“Well that sounds exciting. Unfortunately there are a mighty amount of nasty things out there that a spaceman can catch so we have to do the preliminary vaccines, you understand.”

“Of course. I figured something like this might be required.”

“Definitely. You know? I knew someone who went out to the black without any of this stuff and he landed on some rock God knows where and came back with a bug that made his finger and toes nails fall out and his skin turn this really pretty blue color. Almost like forget-me-nots. Rather nasty virus that one was. Have you seen a forget me not? They’re not very common anymore, shame really, but they are quite pretty.”

Adam had turned a funny pale color at the story and swallowed thickly. “Can’t say that I have but Doctor…”

“Weiss.”

“Weiss… you don’t think I’ll get that virus will you?”

“Hm?”

“The one that makes my skin turn blue and nails and stuff fall out…”

“Oh! No, of course not. That’s why we’re giving you all these vaccines. Don’t you worry. You’ll be perfectly fine.” He patted Adam’s knee and Adam relaxed a little. “Nurse, why don’t you help Mr. Lambert up onto the table and we’ll start administering the shots.

“Of course doctor.”

That voice. Adam’s head shot up and he watched as the nurse turned and smiled at him. How he had missed the mess of ear rings lining the nurses ear he would never know but he definitely recognize the kohl rimmed eyes and pouty lips.

Tommy Joe Ratliff was his nurse.

“Mr. Lambert…” Tommy was smirking in triumph but had his hand out towards the table where Adam was supposed to lay. “If you could just lie on your stomach please?”

Adam was speechless, not something terribly common for him and it took him a moment to tune back into reality before he was moving towards the table.

“And unbuckle your pants.”

“Huh?!”

Tommy chuckled and tilted his head. “The shots go here.” He pointed to just the back of his hips, right where they started getting fleshy. Adam flushed but did as he was told, undoing his belt and the fastenings on his pants before climbing up to lay on his stomach, head pillowed on his arms. “I have to pull your pants down some.” Adam was about to protest before Tommy’s bare calloused digits were slipping under the waistband of his pants and underwear together and tugging down. Adam resolutely ignored the even warmer flush creeping up on his cheeks (the ones on his face!) and just closed his eyes. The sound of ripping was quickly followed by cold wetness on his hips and the smell of rubbing alcohol. “Just prepping the area.” Tommy said, still with his smile.

“Thank you nurse.”

“Of course doctor.”

Adam rolled his eyes and sighed, figuring Tommy would leave now but much to his surprise, Tommy plopped down on the chair he’d just vacated, scooting it so that it was closer to the table. Adam narrowed his eyes on Tommy, using this as a distraction to the doctor who was moving around behind him. “What are you doing?” He hissed to Tommy who had the audacity to look confused.

“I don’t have the foggiest what you mean..”

“Pretending to be a nurse.”

“How do you know I’m not?”

“Well… you…”

“Aha, see you don’t.”

“Well… are you?”

“Oh fuck no. I don’t do blood and shit.” He made a face and Adam looked at him deadpanned.

“Then what are you doing?”

“Holding your hand, princess. And rockin’ the scrubs. Tell me I don’t look good. Tell me.”

“You don’t look good.” He grumbled.

Tommy made a squeaky sputtering noise. “What?!”

“You don’t look good. You look hot.” And he did, even Adam couldn’t admit it. Not many people could make scrubs look hot but Tommy managed. They were tight and fit close to his body. Plus the top had this deep v-neck, that otherwise would only show the t-shirt normal nurses were wearing underneath. But since Tommy wasn’t a normal fucking nurse he wore NOTHING underneath so the deep V showed off his collar and a little of his chest and it was hot. Plus, just some of his bangs were showing under the cloth cap and the black rimmed eyes were a nice contrast to all the other while he was wearing. All in all, he was hot.

“Mm, that’s better.”

“How did you pull this off?” Adam was still a little miffed that he’d been duped. If he’d know he’d have to drop trou for this he wouldn’t have told Tommy to come because that was a little more intimate than he was ready for yet with Tommy.

“Paid the doctor to let me come in. I’m not allowed to administer anything but I was allowed to swab the area clean. And there was no way in hell I was going to miss seeing your ass up close. It’s a mighty fine ass, you should be proud.”

Adam made a pouty face. “I am proud.” His cheeks were still red.

“Relax sweetheart. You wanted me here, so I’m here.” And then Tommy held out a hand and lifted a brow. Adam couldn’t help it, he rolled his eyes but the grin was unavoidable as he pulled out his hand and grabbed Tommy’s. The blond smiled and Adam rolled his eyes again as he got comfortable, pulling Tommy just a little bit closer. He heard the doctor roll back over to him and set a tray on his back, the different shots rattling atop it.

“Are you ready Mr. Lambert? We have six.”

“I guess. I won’t be any more ready.” He tried to joke but he knew he looked nervous. He didn’t mean to but he ended up by looking up to Tommy. The blond met his gaze and then lifted a hand to run back through his hair before just letting it rest there, thumb circling his temple.

--

Six shots later and Adam’s hips felt awful. It wasn’t the pricking of the needles that hurt but more what they injected into his muscles that now ached.

“Okay, you can buckle back up but I want you to stay here for about twenty minutes to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions, okay?” That doctor was way too cheerful to just have injected six shots into his butt.

“Sure.”

“I’ll be back to check on you in a bit.” He nodded and sat back, doing up his pants again and then the buckle before just laying back down.

“Do you want me to leave?” Tommy asked him, sounding unsure. Adam didn’t answer and instead just held out his hand. Tommy’s smaller one slid back into place and Adam rested back down on his arm. He was going to enjoy the moment while he had it. It wasn’t long before Tommy bent and laid his head on his own next to Adam, watching as Adam examined the hand.

“Why are your fingers so calloused?” He asked, opening Tommy’s hand and then sliding the pad of his own finger down one of the blonds. They were so long, he was jealous. But they looked worn and well used. Worker’s hands.

“I play guitar. That’s what mostly gets them like that.”

“And this?” He ran his fingers along Tommy’s palm where there were more rough patches.

“When I’m not flying out with ships, I like to work with the loaders down on the docks. I’ve never been what you’d call a guys guy but I’m pretty strong and it keeps me busy. Plus the pay is pretty good and the guys are fun.”

“Wow. You’re talented.” Adam said with a smile though he wouldn’t look at Tommy yet. “How long have you been playing guitar? Do you play anything else? What about sing. Do you sing?”

“Slow down.” Tommy said with a chuckle. “It’s a wonder you don’t pass out from a lack of oxygen, I swear. I’ve been playing guitar for a long time. I’m self taught though so I’m probably doing a lot of things wrong. And I can play the keyboard too. And as far as singing goes, I do sing, but I probably shouldn’t. Because its awful.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad.”

“No no, I assure you. Mirrors break, babies cry, wallpaper curls.”

He started laughing at the images Tommy was supplying and then just pressed his whole hand to Tommy’s. “I sing.” He started, just feeling like talking. “I’ve always like to sing, and I almost decided to just do that, but then my parents pushed me to get through college. I was good at what I was doing. I don’t know if I’ll stay with it after this trip. I don’t know if the whole research thing suits me.”

“Why don’t you say fuck it and just start a band or something?” Tommy asked, stretching his hand some even as his brown eyes watched Adam.

“Dunno.” He shrugged. “I don’t know if I want a band or just to do performance singing or if I even want to make a career out of it. They say you’ll hate it after awhile if you do that. So I don’t know. I want to see how this trip goes before I decide on anything like that.”

“Hm. Well you’ll have to sing for me on the trip, you know this right?”

“Oh do I now?”

“Yup. Now that you’ve told me, you won’t be able to avoid showing me just how good you are.”

Adam looked up and smiled. “Only if you agree to play with me. Play guitar.” That earned him a smile in return.

“Deal.”

“Good.” Adam held his gaze awhile longer before settling back to just watching their hands. “Sorry about that whole…. Man handling thing in the hall earlier…” He spoke quieter, his fingers tracing the lines of Tommy’s palm.

“Don’t be sorry, man. It was hot, don’t worry.” Tommy admitted it so freely, like he had nothing to hide. Adam liked that, he liked that a lot. Smiling wide he closed his eyes and shook his head, just patting Tommy’s hand and falling silent as they waited for Adam to get the all clear to leave.

--

By the time the Doctor came back, Adam was almost asleep, ready for a nap even though the day was only half over. He was lucky Dr. Weiss only popped his head in to tell him he was good to go before leaving them alone again because it would have been embarrassing to have the doctor find him half asleep.

“It’s probably from the vaccines.”

Adam looked to Tommy as he sat up and slid off the table, wincing some. “What?”

“The drowsiness. It’s probably from the vaccines. You should go home and just sleep it off.”

“Meeeeh. Neil will kill me. He’s been on my ass about packing and loading stuff already.”

“Well, as your nurse, I say you have to go home. Immediate bed rest.” Tommy spoke with mock seriousness, hands on his hips and everything.

Adam just snorted and shook his head. “Fine, fine.”

“Good. Now c’mon. I’m sure the others are waiting for you.” Tommy moved to the door and went for the handle before Adam stopped him.

“Wait.”

Moving from the table he crossed the small room, and came up slowly to the blond. Blue held brown, searching, waiting. He licked his lips and Tommy mirrored his move, turning more towards him before Adam mentally said ‘fuck it’ and leaned down to brush his lips over Tommy’s. They were soft, and he tasted of mint and it was good. It was damn good. He pressed it a little more, just for the moment, urged on by Tommy responding but eventually pulled back. His finger tips were on the soft ridge of Tommy’s jaw and he could feel the slightest bit of stubble there. “Thanks for being here.” He said in a hushed voice and Tommy only smiled.

“Sure. Anytime.” He smiled a little more before pecking Adam’s lips and opening the door. Adam watched him leave before he moved out to, seeing Zach waiting for him a little down the hall. He raised his eyebrow at Tommy in scrubs and, you know, the fact that he and Tommy came out of the room together but Adam just shook his head.

“Don’t worry about it. Just take me home. My ass hurts and I want a fucking nap.” Zach just laughed and shook his head, leading Adam out of the infirmary.

Author’s Notes: 1. I suck at deadlines. I’ve figured this out rather quickly.
2. I also apparently have a thing for hands. I’m only sorry for one of these two things. I’ll let you figure it out. Here’s a hint: it’s not number two.

Otherwise, I’m really happy with how this came out. I’m a huge sucker for fluff and sappy romance and shit so that tends to show up a lot in my pairings. The next chapter should come out soon because they’re ready to launch here soon so I shouldn’t take as long as normal. But I’ve said that like… five billion times already so hopefully I’ll actually get the next chapter out faster this time. I need to start writing ahead so I have a buffer. Maybe when the muse strikes me I’ll try doing that. Also, I’m probably going to open a Dreamwidth account to post stuff over there that I don’t feel comfortable posting here. Since I still use this as a personal journal too, I don’t want to post everything I write here so look out for a new account opening up for that. Otherwise, I think that’s all I need to update for now. If I think of something else, I’ll get back to you all. <3
