It's a natural phenomenon, really. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Two things sell FF games - callbacks to previous iterations of the franchise, and pretty boys. Squeenix decided to combine the two and thus generate massive sales.

Besides, it's better (and significantly less disturbing) than a pretty Moogle.
