Miriam felt her heart lurch into her throat, stopping her breathing cold.
He looked like he was carved from ice.
The moment hung in the air, fragile and brittle, and then, with a noise that was half choke, half scream, she lunged forward and wrapped her baby boy in her arms.
“You’ve got to count to fifty! No cheating!” One of the girls squealed as her brother pinched her. “Guys, come on. Ready?” Giggling, they chorused their reply, already jostling for prime position, ready to run, fan out, hide.
“Do I start counting yet?” Helen, bright-eyed with excitement, was almost bouncing on the spot, ready to go.
“Not yet. I’ll tell you when.” One face peeped out from behind his brother. “Jamie, what are you doing here?”
Jamie stuck his hands on his hips and pouted. “Hide and Seek!”
“You can’t play with us.” The giggling turned to sniggering. Behind him, Helen scoffed. “Go away, runt.”
Jacob stepped between Helen and Jamie. “Don’t call him that. I said he could play.”
Joshua moved to stand next to his brother. “He’s good at hide and seek.”
“The best,” Jacob added, nodding.
“You’ll never find him,” Joshua continued, looking right at Helen.
Helen grinned, showing teeth. “Wanna bet.” With a theatrical flourish, she turned to the wall and buried her face in her hands. “One. Two. Three.”
Around her, her cousins scattered.
He stirred, turning sleepily into her arms with a soft mewling sound. “’s it my turn?” he muttered sleepily against her cheek.
Miriam smiled, eyes bright, and cuddled him close until he nestled in, tail slithering across her wrist to hold her tight. “It’s okay baby, go back to sleep.” She sat back on her haunches, not feeling anything but the heavy, warm weight in her arms.
“Helen! Avi! Time to go.” The tall woman turned to accept a hug from her sister. “It was wonderful to see you again, Miriam. We’ll have to have you and the boys over soon.”
Miriam smiled, nodding. “Yes, we must. Here they are.” She watched as her two eldest sons trooped in, leading their cousins. “Joshua, where’s James? Helen and Avi are leaving now, he’ll want to say goodbye.”
Her smile died as the four children in front of her shared a look.
“Joshua? Jacob? Where is your brother?” Automatically, she looked out the window to where the trees in their yard swayed in the breeze.
Joshua winced. “We were playing hide and seek, and he hid and…we don’t know where he is.”
She took the steps slowly, mindful of the heavy weight sleeping in her arms. Ben met her at the bottom of the stairs. “Thank God, you found him.” He slipped an arm around her shoulders and pressed a kiss to the side of her face, tasting tears. “Where was he?”
“In the attic.” She slipped past her husband and walked towards Jamie’s bedroom.
He blinked as she passed, then turned to follow. “I searched the attic myself. There was nothing up there but boxes and the old chest of drawers.”
James muttered in his sleep as Miriam transferred him to his bed and began to gently unwind his tail from her arm. “That’s where he was.”
Ben stared at his son in disbelief. “There’s no way, how did he fit…”
Miriam ignored the question. “You’d best go call off the search, and let them all know he’s okay.”
Ben took a deep breath to ask more questions, then subsided. Resting his hand on his wife’s shoulder for a moment, he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Miriam pulled the covers up, tucking him in. In his sleep, James’ tail flickered against her hand and rewound itself around her wrist. This time she didn’t try to unwind it.
