The In-Between Fandom: Angel - Sometime in a happier Season Five, with Spike/Fred Rating: light R, to be safe A/N: Almost, but not quite the morning after for Spike and Fred. I've been in a romantic mood lately, for some reason...
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for dabbling! *hugs*
I love all of this ficlet, but I especially love these bits:
Her hand, splotchy from chemistry experiments past, scarred by battle (and probably more science experiments) rests right over where his heart will never beat again.
and:
She’s totally unguarded in sleep - no hint of tension or doubt. Not that there was any last night, but still - he’s learned not to trust in the morning after.
This last line is so sad...but not depressing, because it's Fred, so we know that he won't get hurt in the "morning after" at all.
Thank you! I love Fred - she's one of the most open-hearted characters left in either Buffy or Angel. She's been hurt, betrayed, even, but she still manages to keep that experience separate, and trust where she trusts.
I was originally a biochem major and remember going back to the dorms with my hands in all different shades, depending on what I'd been working with and whether or not I'd been stupid enough to forget gloves. Fred reminds me a lot of a chemistry teacher I had with scars on her hands. She got them from one of her earliest chem classes, in which the teacher wanted to show how chlorine and sodium react to make sodium chloride (and forgot how violent the reaction is). The first three rows were permanently scarred.
