I HATE IT.

Remember, if you think you've got a static charge, brush the back of your hand against something metal.

Yah, I'm actually getting into the habit of doing that all the time now. I think it's partly to do with the really dry room and the material of my sweatpants (I can always here crackling when I take them off or put them on. The worst is when I forget and I touch my laptop... does the shock intensify if you touch an electronic device? And can this shock cause damage to the device? Lastly, would a humidifier (to make the room less dry) help lower the amount of static charge build up?

Yes, a humidifier would significantly drop the charge build-up but then you've got to make sure that the thing always has plenty of water. If it goes dry, it can overheat and cause a fire (unless it's a "fancier" model which shuts down when the water drops to a certain level). The shock shouldn't have a significant impact on the laptop, if the laptop is plugged in. Then the charge grounds out. But if it isn't plugged in, you might cause some problems. Put the laptop on or near something metal that you'll have to touch first. That should help.

Don't you remember any of this from Physics class?

Haha... yah, too much biology, so I'm getting rusty on my physics. Speaking of physics, I'm actually reading up on this new book called "The Physics of Superheroes" by James Kakalios. So far, I've already learned that the gravity on Krypton must be at least 15 times greater than on Earth in order for Superman to "leap tall buildings" and in order for Krypton to achieve this kind of gravitation pull, it must have some kind of super dense material in the planet, such as a neutron star core. Yah, it's pretty nerdy but cool stuff. Anyway, this is how I'll refresh on my physics.
