Irritated

Ok, on one hand, I have a friends Journal who points to the article about the cafe A Taste of Heaven and their policies on children. http://www.detnews.com/2005/editorial/0511/20/A23-387307.htm This of course was implemented because yuppie parents are ( Read more... )

The thing I find the most amusing is that the business aren't asking people not to bring kids in. They're asking that parents tell their kids to use indoor voices, and if they start acting up to please take them outside and deal with the situation before returning inside. This is what every "good" parent I've ever known does when their children act up. Nobody expects perfection out of kids, just a general sense of manners and attentive parents ( ... )

Damn it. I was trying to provide more screwed up geek children into the world. I appear to have missed my goal somewhat if my children are not total heathens. This is all Chris' fault.

I think you might be conflating a little bit here... misterweasel November 21 2005, 21:32:11 UTC
I don't think the article, or proprietors, are advocating raising little children under a fascist regime... in fact, they cite people who seem to "get it" as taking their kid outside for a bit when necessary, and they cite people who "didn't get it" as letting their kid lie on the floor in the coffee line howling while they read the paper. They mention parents who have "normal" kids, and would appear to be moderate, as the kind of clientele who are welcome.

However, I can understand that reading that back to back with something about a 3year old who cuts could leave one in a state... but I think it's a false choice between "hammer down your infant until they are insane" and "let them run completely wild no matter what or they'll be cutting at age 3"

And in general, yes, extremes are what sells, what interests, and what titillates. And they are also (thankfully) very rare.

For the kids laying on the floor in the middle of place, or the ones who were literally bouncing off the displays, ya, that's gotta stop ( ... )

I think a lot of it is that exact backlash. Society went way overboard with the whole kid friendly thing, despite the fact that households with children are in fact a minority in this country. By a not insignificant margin I might add (households with no under 18 children: ~72K w/ under 18 children: ~39K ( ... )
