OMFG, the truth about firefly

buffy, B5, ST:TNG, ST:DSN, west wing... i've made the point in the past that the first few episodes of each were entertaining, but they didn't really achieve their full potential until at least the second season ( Read more... )

which of these things is not like the other... ppopovich October 31 2004, 21:58:51 UTC
you're right. enterprise doesn't really fit. but then, the only star trek time travel plot line i've ever liked involved the NCC-1701-C. the rest are fitting fodder for tom smith's "time plot".

suffice to say, i wasn't thrilled they spent over a year on the temporal war story arc. looks like they wrapped it up now though. hopefully they move on to better things.

As far as B5, yes the first season was a lot - A LOT - of character development, and stupid ideas like the soul hunters and the alien body-armor beast episodes. But it is nonetheless an integral part of the arc, and some on the stuff that got revealed later wouldn't make much sense or be as enjoyable without the foreshadowing in the first season. For example "Midnight on the Firing Line" for pushing the Narn and Centauri closer to war, "And The Sky Full of Stars" and of course "Sign And Portents" which show us Sinclair's missing 24 hours, "Babylon Squared" with the reappearance of Bablyon 4, and last but not least "A Voice In The Wilderness" which sets up Draal and the Great Machine on Epsilon 3.

Any other show with a forget-me-in-an-hour plots can't use this as rationale for their first season, so in the general sense I agree. Thank the maker for JMS and his vision!

indeed. JMS seeded a lot of plot elements early, most of which don't become apparent until mid-season 2 or later. if b5 had been cancelled halfway through its first season, we wouldn't have gotten the payoff...

the point is that with series like b5, buffy, ST:TNG, and west wing, we end up valuing them for their deep character development and rich worlds, which make the plot lines more meaningful. firefly's first half season shows the same level of promise, but since it was cancelled, its potential went unfulfilled.

for those that watch it, west wing has started the bizarreness comparable to the last season of angel and buffy. i keep expecting a helicopter to fall on someone.
