Do you drink?  Beer?  Wine?  Cocktails?  Where are your favorite places to enjoy a good drink (or three)?

The other day I realized that, ironically enough,  I have favorite drink-spots around the world, but when it comes to my hometown I am at a loss.    Years ago, I used to have some favorite spots here in Houston:  Marfreless, Cecil’s, Waugh ( Read more... )

My all-time favorite place to have a beer (Killians, btw, unless they have Corona on tap...rare around here) is this little hole-in-the-wall just outside of Noblesville Indiana. A friend and I stop there on the way back from each and every concert we see up at the Verizon Center. It's eclectic as hell, model trains and lacrosse sticks for example, and it is just a blast. I cannot begin to tell you the name of it and we've been there countless times!

Ah, the hole-in-the-wall... atmosphere! Do you ever dig drinking in a total fuckin dive?

I remember going through a Bukowski phase/faze/haze where I would only drink in divey joints. Fun times.

At the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, my favourite drink is the Sakura Royale. It's like a Kir Royale, but made with Cherry Blossom Liqueur instead of Crème de Cassis. The "Nightwatch Bar" in the "American Hotel" in Amsterdam, you used to be able to get the best cocktails in town. Pricy, but packed with celebrities. qaggaz and I once shared a table with the infamous Herman Brood. He gave us Rolo chocolates.

For beer, De Beiaard in Amsterdam is the best place in the world! They have a selection of 450 beers from all over the world.

For absynthe, "The Absynthe Bar" in Amsterdam is great.

In Seattle, we enjoy Kells Irish Pub for a good selection of Single Malt Scotch.

Perfect! I'm going to be in Amsterdam (however briefly) this Spring. I will definitely hit at least one of these. I'd love to try the absynthe but have had real trouble finding it in the past. Do you know how feasible it is to acquire there and bring back to the States?

It is easy! Just go to any liquor store that carries Absynthe and buy a bottle. If found by US customs (which is unlikely), they will merely confiscate the bottle. No fine, no fuss. qaggaz has been bringing over since it became readily available. They even sell bottles at the airport liquor store. :)

Thanks. It is decided. I will obtain absynthe, and I will drink it from a grail. So let it be written.

I was just doing a bit of quick research on it and stumbled across this quote:
Oscar Wilde, who had more than a casual acquaintance with absinthe, wrote, "After the first glass you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world."

I have little experience in bars. I'm at that stage in life where being able to afford more than one single drink automatically makes the bar OMGtotallyawesome!. I anticipate the days in the future when I will be a grown-up who can say magical, grown-up things like "put it on my tab" and "on the rocks" and "dry," or whatever.

If my friends are there, if I can converse with them with out having to scream into their ears, and if my white russians don't cost an arm and a leg, I'll love it.

Lately, our most frequented bars have been McElroy's and Catbirds. And by lately, I mean, like, 3 times in the last 4 months or so.

Duuude. Give this woman a caucasian!

Beware of "put in on my tab." It is almost as good as saying, "pad my bill." Of course, it depends on where you are, how well you know the keep, and how well you can do math with a few drinks in you.

My favorite grown up drink order is "Scotch. Single malt. Neat." I had a friend who used to order Manhattens, not because he liked them, but because he liked the way it sounded when he ordered them.

I don't know of McElroy's or Catbird's. I'll check them out.
