I decided to start a new hobby in honor of the new year, and as usual, I've gone overboard with it. ;-) I always go overboard when I get excited about something. My new hobby is sewing!
I used to sew while in high school and a bit after it, but that was ages ago, and I've forgotten everything. Plus, I don't have my grandma showing me around any more. :-(
So, I ordered a sewing machine online. This is my new baby:
It's a basic Husqvarna Viking machine, nothing fancy. I actually was about to buy a couple of fancier machines first, but when I read user reviews, they weren't good. So, I'll rather take a simple machine from a reliable brand than a more expensive one from a not-quite-so-reliable brand.
Anyway, my machine will be shipped at the end of this month, so I can't do anything yet. Or...I can. I went a bit nuts in a fabric store today. This is what I bought:
Most of these fabrics are cottons, but the two top ones are not, The top one is a velvety type material, pretty thick, and I'm thinking of making a bag out of it. Possibly combining it with the fabric below (it looks more pink here than it is), which is a curtain fabric and has a nice sheen to it. I also got some backing fabrics which are not here. I plan to make some bags, some headcoverings, cute little things for the home, and later on I might dip my toes into the waters of making clothes. Oh, and I might make a cute baby blanket for a friend who's expecting a girl this spring. :-)
So, that's that. In fandom-related news, my students love the Hogwarts Notice Board I've put up in my classroom. It contains paper props from the movies, stuff like Harry's letter from Hogwarts, some wanted posters of Harry from movie 5, Hogwarts Express timetable, and stuff like that. I told one group of students I might even bring my big Snape poster to school...only, my students are so young that they mostly think Snape is just "the nasty guy".
In Lost news, I did go back and start watching it again. And I have developed a little crush on Jack, which I've never had before bc I was a Sayid & Sawyer girl. How's that possible?
