[OOC] A handy guide to depression (and mania)

Nov 07, 2012 22:49

As you may or (more probably) may not know, when I’m not being Kurt’s mun, I am a psychologist who spends my days working on a clinical trial comparing treatments for adolescent depression. The vast majority of my working week is spent with kids suffering from depression and other mental health problems.

In light of Ryan Murphy’s tweet the other day ( Read more... )

This sounds like Blaine, though it was most likely an unforeseen conclusion to his behavior, due to wonky and unreliable writing of the character, but it gives him the patterns that fit the illness. Also I would see for people like the Andersons, from what little we can glean of them, they would not be thrilled with a mentally ill son on top of him being gay so it would probably go unaddressed. Under rug swept like so much of their life. They drove away their older child, and now their younger child meanders through life rather moorless, which would only make the symptoms worse I imagine.

Is this an illness that would require intervention or would the stability of his future life w/Kurt tamp down the illness?

I think... I think he has issues stemming from fear of rejection and abandonment and a rather crushing fear of loneliness, so it's probably partly from his family's indifference to his pain, partly from being separated from Kurt that it's more evident now than when they are together and happy. I like to think it becomes less up and down as he gets older, and he can find an even keel to settle into once they are married and start a family. Though I'm sure triggers like the first time Christopher gets hurt, or Kurt is late coming home without notice could start a burgeoning panic attack that could turn into an episode.

Poor Blaine :( I'm sure there will be triggers for him, throughout his life, but hopefully the more times that happens and he has Kurt - and later on his children - to cuddle him and love him, the easier things will get for him. Kurt would never abandon him, or treat him like the Andersons did. Hopefully he'll learn to believe that, in time.

This is very interesting. I find it fascinating. I didn't know you did this.

I don't, any more. New job and all that. Dealing with kids who have learning/educational difficulties now. But still, yeah, I have the knowledge. Which comes in useful with Sierra's bipolar, Blaine's depression, Kurt's borderline eating disorder... they're a screwed up bunch of kids when you stop to think about it >.>

They really, really are. Don't forget Cooper, who is vain and blind. And Wes, who probably is a goody goody perfectionist.

Issues abound! At least Wes and Sierra have each other, and Kurt and Blaine.
