"They took a moment to survey their handiwork. Most of the birds had been subdued but students were still milling about, trying to find their breakfasts and letters scattered throughout the Hall.

Suddenly a voice rose above the din."




"Snape searched his face, eyes narrowed dangerously. "I see," he said slowly, "so, if I don't go down that way, I should just wait right here, is that it?"

James shrugged. "If you like," he replied casually, running a hand through his hair."





"With his index finger, Remus poked the tip of Archimedes' nose; the statue wrinkled his face in protest and scowled.

Lily was hovering just behind him. Remus knew what she wanted to ask, but he also knew better than to anticipate her question. Any information offered on his part would be automatically construed as an admission of guilt; she had a far keener mind than most people gave her credit for."





"Sirius was standing at the sink, outlined by the light through the window. Remus saw the slight jerk of his bare shoulders, the tightening of tendons in his neck, but Sirius did not turn around when he asked again, "Where are you going?"
