powers, skills, pets and equipment:

"You are a question that has never been posed before, Merlin."

The name alone probably clues you in. But this much younger warlock is still learning about the magical gifts that he was born into. That said, he's already used magic to move objects, stop or slow down time/an item, animate inanimate objects, summon fire, wind, and lightening, pick locks, put up a magical barrier to protect himself from magical attacks...the list goes on. Even though his abilities are inherent and instinctual, studying and incantations help strengthen and control them. He is also a remarkably fast learner and also has a resistance to magic that the average person doesn't possess. Our beloved Mist could make things interesting.

Merlin is also a Dragonlord, like his father before him and supposedly the last of the line. Through this he is able to speak to dragons and make them obey his commands.

He can also polish armor, sharpen swords, mop floors, tend to horses...

His book of magic will be coming with him.

canon history:

It was by King Uther Pendragon's decree that sorcery became a crime punishable by death. The Great Purge swept through Camelot, during which hundreds who used sorcery and followed the Old Religion were killed. Gaius, a court physician and a practitioner himself, hid a Dragonlord named Balinor with a woman named Hunith. Balinor and Hunith fell in love, but when his whereabouts were discovered, he was forced to flee. But Hunith was pregnant. And so it was in a small village called Ealdor, where a prophesied Merlin was born.

Twenty years later, a young Merlin arrives at Camelot and instinctively uses his magic to save a falling Gaius upon their first meeting. His new mentor told him to keep his head down, so naturally Merlin quickly gets himself in trouble with a rather prattish young Prince Arthur.

Merlin is awakened by a voice saying his name, and follows it to find the last living dragon (Kilgharrah) that had been imprisoned in a cave beneath Camelot. By talking to it, he learns that he has a destiny on top of all his other problems - to help Arthur become King and unite the land of Albion. Despite his protests, the wheels of destiny where set in motion when he saved Arthur from an assassination attempt. As a reward, he was made the Prince's manservant.

No good deed goes unpunished. However, it wouldn't be the last time he saved Arthur's life, and in time he resented it less and less. He starts to see that Arthur will be a good king, and isn't as bad as he seems.

After receiving a book of magic from Gaius, Merlin began studying magic more formally, realizing it could be a blessing rather than a curse. As new threats arise, he learns new ways of counteracting them, even if it means putting himself at great risk. Despite their many brushes with danger and even death itself, the young warlock continues to grow in some way, and much the same can be said for Arthur, as their destiny and unlikely friendship have them intertwined.

There are people and moments along the way that deserve an honorable mention. Nimueh, the sorceress who used magic (at Uther's request, no less) to enable Arthur's mother to become pregnant with him. She was also the first one targeted when Igraine paid the price for his birth, setting off the Great Purge. The sorceress devoted herself to revenge until finally being killed by Merlin.

While Arthur continues struggling with his feelings for Gwen, Merlin has but one brief experience with love. Her name was Freya, a young druid girl. A young cursed druid girl. Every night at midnight, she turned into a bastet, a feline monster with wings. Merlin freed her from a bounty hunter's captivity and later planned to leave Camelot with her. She was someone who could understand him, someone he didn't have to hide anything from. Arthur wounded her in her bastet form, but Merlin helped her get away. However, she couldn't be saved. Merlin carried her to the lake, where she died promising to repay him for making her feel loved. Famous last words from the Lady of the Lake.

It wasn't the first time that Merlin did the right thing only to have a bittersweet outcome. Even though Kilgharrah warned him that the druid boy Mordred would someday kill Arthur, Merlin still helped him escape execution. But once it was clear that they were on separate sides, he promised Merlin that he would neither forgive nor forget him.

Even though Merlin knew that the Kilgharrah might attack Camelot, he still honored his promise to set him free. In return...the Great Dragon attacked Camelot. Gaius then revealed that one Dragonlord with the power to stop the dragon was still alive, and that Dragonlord was Merlin's own father. They were reunited briefly before Balinor was killed in an ambush. Now possessing the powers that Dragonlords pass down to their sons, Merlin returned to Camelot with Arthur. Once he was face to face with the dragon, Merlin banished him from Camelot. Naturally, the credit for his good deed went to someone else - Arthur, in this instance.

Merlin's life revolves around his destiny, putting him at the center of numerous assassination attempts, royal family drama, and magical battles involving dark alliances and mythical beasts, without revealing himself in the process. But somehow he always finds time to polish Arthur's boots.

personality:

In many ways, Merlin is your typical youth. He can be lazy, looking for magical shortcuts to complete mundane tasks. He can be awkward and clumsy. He can definitely be mischievous. Merlin won't hesitate to resort to lying to cover his tracks, even if he's not always very good at it. But add a touch of magic and the whole "destiny" thing comes into play.

At his core, Merlin is a fiercely loyal person with a strong sense of right and wrong. He stands up, speaks up, even when it seems slightly foolish for him to do so. He's empathetic towards the plight of others, especially when he could find himself in the same situation that they are. He's not one to sit idly by when someone's being treated unfairly, especially not if it's someone he cares about. He's a selfless friend, the kind who would risk or even trade his life for another, as he's done for Arthur, Gwen, Gaius, and his mother. But he will also kill for them if left with no other choice.

There is also a rash and bold side to him. He has proven himself to be a quick thinker, but often acts and uses his magic without fully considering the consequences. He sometimes speaks in the same way. Despite the fact that he and Arthur are friends (or maybe because of it), Merlin sometimes speaks with an insolence that another Prince would have his head for. And he has a curiosity that...borders on being nosy.

While he usually tries to see the good in everyone, Merlin also has a habit of being swallowed up by his powers and destiny. But what defines him is also a source of fear and doubt, as the discovery of his gift could spell the end of his friendship with Arthur, as well as his life.
