For me... I'll be doing Australia clean-up day every year I possibly can from now on.
There are not public bins everywhere in Japan. Infact, finding a public bin is a bit like finding the holy grail. But even when there isn't regular places to discard rubbish, Japanese streets aren't full of rubbish because they just don't throw it on the ground. Sometimes they do... I'm not saying the streets are totally devoid of trashs, but it isn't to the degree that you find in the streets of Australian towns and cities.
It gives me a bit of cultural shame and makes me want to do something about it at home.
And you are right Sue-bear.... it is far better to take some pride in our country, especially our places we show to tourists, than to shrug and say we can't do anything about it.
