Character

Name: Porom
Fandom: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Time Period: Just after the moon landing, before entering the Subterrane.
Wing Color: Peach
History: Porom in FFIV | Porom in FFIV: The After Years
Personality: Unlike her brother Palom, Porom is polite, helpful and responsible. She's dedicated to her studies, to her home and its residents and to the poorly-defined thing that they pray to in Mysidia and generally convinced she is enough of a moral paragon to police the behaviour of everyone else. She is incapable of keeping her nose out of other people's business, for better or worse, and always feels the need to right any perceived 'wrongs'. Especially when the one responsible for these perceived wrongs is her brother. As a rule she at least practices what she preaches, making a lot of effort to meet her own high standards for behaviour and dedication, but not being a hypocrite doesn't make her that much less annoying.

She worries about others, especially her brother, constantly and does her best to keep the people around her safe and happy. Nearly all of her nagging is well-intentioned even if she sometimes does demand that rules are followed solely for the sake of following rules. 'Rules for the sake of rules' is one of her worst habits, she's fairly reliant on having rules there and her considerable intelligence is held back a lot by her unwillingness to question things she doesn't want to question. She doesn't deal with change well and when faced with it she clings to the familiar. For the most part 'the familiar' consists of her daily routines, proper etiquette, following rules and squabbling with Palom.

She's actually a got a lot more in common with her brother than she'd like to admit, secretly wanting to leave her home and see more of the world as she did during her time with Cecil as a child. She resents what she perceives as his freedom a little and is terrified of letting him surpass her. Or worse, letting him not need her.

Strengths:
Physical: Despite being frail, not all that quick and relying on her magical abilities far more than she does her physical abilities, Porom's pretty good at not getting ill. She takes great care to stay in good health and for the most part it works. She doesn't tire easily and is used to dealing with multiple things everything at once, balancing caring for the Elder in his failing health with making sure nobody is doing anything against the rules or potentially unsafe, everyone is healthy and eating their vegetables and brushing their teeth and saying their prayers, her own studies and spiritual growth and keeping her brother out of trouble. She's also a little more durable than she'd seem and is able to keep standing when she really shouldn't but that's mostly sheer stubbornness. Her skill with magic manifests as both a proficiency for healing and as a natural resistance to magic that she can further enhance with something like Shell.

Mental: Porom and her brother are both introduced as geniuses. They're prodigies in their own fields and both very intelligent and quick to learn. Throughout their appearances in both the original game and the after years, the two of them provide exposition are keen to demonstrate and share their knowledge. They're also very perceptive, being able even as children to see through a lie that Cecil and Tellah could not. She's also very sensible and generally has a good idea of what to do in a situation. Rules and patterns are very, very important to her and she's always organized and generally has a plan for anything she expects to go wrong (...unfortunately she isn't going to be expecting the bulk of the things that happen in Luceti).

Emotional: Porom is selfless and kind and polite and everything that's expected of a dutiful young white mage. It takes an awful lot to tempt her to break a rule or betray her principles and even then most of the time she'll only be tempted and won't actually do it. She has a very strong sense of duty, if she feels she's expected to do something it'll get done whether she actually wants to do it or not.

She's also quite emotionally resistant, having dealt with all the fun of being an RPG hero (including being turned to stone by choice) at the age of five with no major problems to show for it. Her confidence that she is always in the right helps.

Weaknesses:
Physical: Her one source of any offence at all is Holy. She can't hit things particularly hard and nearly all the magic she's so skilled with is of the 'healy healy fun times' variety. While she may not tire that easily the fact that she does dedicate herself to doing everything ever means that she still does spend a great amount of time completely exhausted. In addition, she isn't really all that strong. Being a squishy mage type and all. If she's still standing after a few hits chances are she's running on sheer tenacity.

And running on sheer tenacity has problems. Problems like not taking your own advice and overexerting yourself far too much and ending up spending a good chunk of the game bedridden.

Mental: Her ways of thinking aren't as flexible as her brother's and when the rules and patterns that she's so reliant on are broken she genuinely starts to struggle. Sudden change isn't something she's mentally capable of dealing with well. At all. She also overthinks things a lot and has difficulty ignoring things that bother her. If there is something wrong or imperfect ever then it's something that she needs to right before she can think properly. She also has a fairly bad habit of becoming complacent and stubbornly refusing to question things that she's become comfortable with, whether she's actually happy with them or not.

Emotional: Porom has a nasty passive-aggressive streak that shows itself when people get on her bad side. Being used to 'if you're polite then others will also be polite', she takes any breaches of etiquette from people she doesn't know well very personally whether they were intended as insults or not and has a lot of difficulty with the idea that someone can be impolite without being deliberately antagonistic.

She has no concept of 'minding one's own business'. None at all. Combined with a habit of being a terrible nag, this can make her all sorts of annoying.

Samples

First Person: [She sits up, flinching a little before her eyes become accustomed to the unexpected bright sunlight.]

Were we attacked? ...Ow, it certainly feels like we were attacked. How long have- Palom? Palom, are you here? What- where's my staff?

...I'm fairly sure I expected the moon to have less greenery than this- Oh, come on. I must have dropped it somewhere near here. I had it before...this. And can't have just vanished on its own well okay, it did that one time but I'm still fairly sure that was Palom's fault.

...It's not here, is it? This isn't good. What's become of everyone else? What if they're hurt?

Standing around here's a good way to get nothing at all accomplished. I should go find them.

Third Person: Porom was going to ignore the fact that she had somehow changed clothes while unconscious for now. Horrifying as that detail of this situation was, the fact that she was suddenly unarmed and in a strange place was far more so. She had to prioritize these things. Find somewhere safe. Find her companions. Maybe find a more passable weapon than the fallen branch she had picked up. And then, once all the important things were dealt with, she could react to the fact that someone or something had changed her clothes while she was asleep.

“Palom? Are you here anywhere?” She was aware of the dangers of shouting, she didn't want to risk attracting monsters while she was unarmed, she couldn't see or hear anything around and she needed to find the others monsters or no. “Rydia? Ceodore? Luca- Anyone? Is anyone here? Are you okay? Do you need help?”

There was no answer and she sighed, shaking her head.

“Please be okay, I'm going to find you.” She said quietly as she looked around, trying to find some way to tell one direction apart from any other. Just trees, wherever she looked. And attempting to work out broadly where she was by checking the types of trees wasn't working, there were trees that shouldn't be growing together in the same place alongside trees that she didn't recognise. She continued for some way, only her thoughts for company (at least her thoughts behaved.), until she finally tired and tried to lean back against a tree for a few minutes' rest.

She yelped with pain as the rough bark caught something on her back, turning to see what it was. She'd been expecting a stange growth on the tree that had scratched her somehow. She certainly hadn't been expecting a strange growth on her. She stared at the new wings for a few seconds, unsure what to think of them, then shook her head and continued, adding those to the ever-growing list of things that she would wait to react to until after she knew her companions were safe.
