That's impressive. Where do you work on it? Freewheel has a nice public shop that I used for about 3-4 hours to do the work. I'm lucky that my friend helped out, he used to work at a bike shop. I'm going to try and hit critical mass this month, you ever been?
i work on my bike at the Grease Pit... it's by the triple rock, in the basement of the Bedlam theater. It's free, but if you grab used parts then you give a donation of sorts. I do critical mass sometimes. I have class on friday's now though. it's a good time. That's nice that you had somebody to help out. A couple of my friends are bike couriers, so that is pretty much how I managed to build my bike.
Yeah the Grease Pit is cool. I have some old parts I might give them. I really like the idea behind that place. They were building a bike for a friend of a friend last time I was there. I wish it was closer to uptown. I avoid all the bike shops close to me: the Penn Cycle in uptown because the advice they give rarely helpful and the Alt, which is okay but they have a very limited stock. I might just build my own friends-only bike shop.
I don't have AIM but if you have questions feel free to ask or post something on . Sometimes I post questions on http://www.bikeforums.net/ , but it's sometimes hard to know exactly what someone is talking about unless you see the bike in person so shops and friends are usually the best resources for day-to-day stuff IMHO.

wow. I guess I never figured there were so many things one could do to a bike, and I was just thinking of painting mine when I get back (my old bike that I gave to a friend is returning to me!). You have shown me the light.
wow. i must say, having only known you on LJ, it's been fun watching you turn into a big bike geek at the exact same time as two of my friends in new york and seattle. it must be national bike year. :] in any event, VPB (very pretty bike).
