Daxter grew up in Sandover village, along with childhood friend Jak. Not a whole lot is known about his childhood, but given the fact that when he’s turned into an ottsel no one seems concerned about him or where he’s gone before realizing what happened, it can be assumed that he doesn’t actually have any family there. He also doesn’t ever acknowledge anyone as family. We do know, from the ending of Jak II, that when he was still very young, a Green Eco sage moved to the village with a little boy who didn’t ever speak. Daxter hit it off well with the other boy, named Jak, and they became inseparable friends. Much of their time hanging out was spent with Daxter cleaning around Samos the Sage’s hut(as he states in Jak II, and as Samos is constantly ordering him to do in the Precursor Legacy) but whether or not it was punishment remains to be seen, but given Daxter’s obnoxious personality it’s the most likely reason.
Not long after Samos moved to the village he had/adopted a daughter named Keira, and she became a member of the friendship that was Jak and Daxter...although once they hit puberty that turned into failed attempts at flirting on Daxter’s part.
Being the adventurous sort, and because they were the only two boys in a small coastal village, Jak and Daxter were always off on fun-filled excursions of all sorts. These probably ranged from chasing seagulls and swimming at the beach...making sure to avoid the deep water...to exploring the Forbidden Jungle. Overall it was harmless stuff. The only place they were ordered not to go was Misty Island, since it was too dangerous. Naturally, Jak decided to go explore there and Daxter, albeit timidly, tagged along.
While exploring the island, the pair stumbled on an odd pair directing a group of Lurkers about attacking the village. They quickly moved on, presumably to get off the island and warn everyone, but stumbled upon a vat of Dark Eco and a Red Eco Barrel...Daxter literally tripping over the Eco Barrel. Somehow Jak activated it, but before they could figure out how, a large Lurker attacked them. With nothing else to use against it Jak threw the Eco Barrel at it. It exploded, destroying the Lurker, bet the blast threw him into Daxter, who fell into the Dark Eco as a result.
Daxter was tossed back out seconds later...a few feet shorter and furry with a tail, though it took him a moment to notice the change. After he finished throwing a fit over his dilemma they sought out Samos back in the village, who figured out the gist of what happened easily and said that he couldn’t help him if he'd wanted to. He went on to say that the only person who could lived far to the north and hadn't been heard from in years. And since none of the other Eco sages maintained their teleporter gates, he couldn't send them there either.
The only way north was through the Fire Canyon, which was too hot to walk through. Keira stepped in and mentioned that a zoomer with a heat shield, which she just happened to be working on, could get them through the canyon to Rock Village...she just needed them to find twenty Power Cells to power the shield. So Jak and Daxter began their journey north to find Gol Akaron, the sage of Dark Eco.
Daxter pretty much just rode along the entire adventure, since there wasn’t anything else he could do. They were sent on various quests, starting in and around Sandover Village. These ranged from minor things like clearing Samos' clogged Green Eco collectors and herding Yakows into a pen, to major things like restoring power to the village and disrupting the Lurkers' activities on Misty Island...a minor but important thing they did was to rescue an abandoned Flut Flut egg from a cliff on Sentinel Beach. The baby bird that hatched was an invaluable mount in later areas.
After passing through the Fire Canyon, they found Rock Village being bombarded by flaming rocks and the Blue Eco sage missing. He had been in the process of perfecting a beam that could move a giant boulder that blocked the way to Klaww, the giant Lurker responsible for the barrage. Keira took over the project, estimating that the beam would take forty-five Power Cells to work. While gathering, Jak and Daxter were sent to the areas surrounding the village to do favors and to disrupt any suspicious Lurker activity in those places.
After defeating Klaww and proceeding through the Mountain Pass to the Red Eco sage's village, they found him missing as well and that Gol and his sister Maia were behind the disappearances, as well as the Lurker activity, and that they were planning to use Dark Eco to reshape the world as they saw fit. Naturally, Daxter's first worry was how doomed he was if the guy they were looking for was the one they had to defeat.
To get to Gol and Maia's Citadel, more Power Cells were needed to upgrade the zoomer's heat shield because they'd be passing through the Lava Tube. But since very few people lived in the area, all of these had to be found while exploring the surrounding areas and disrupting Lurker activity. Sometime between the start of the Lava Tube and its finish, Samos was kidnapped and taken to the Citadel and so they now had to save him too.
The final battle atop the Dark Eco silo was concluded when Light Eco was created from the many different ecos being thrown around. While it could have been used to try and change Daxter back to normal it was used to deal the final blow to Gol and Maia, who fell into the silo and were trapped or destroyed.
While further investigating the silo, a Rift Ring and Rift Rider were discovered and brought back to Sandover. When activated, many small monsters flew out of the ring followed by a much larger one that seemed to recognize Jak. To save everyone, Jak launched them on the Rift Rider into the Ring. He and Daxter were separated from Keira and Samos, and arrived in a strange city. Jak was captured and Daxter fled, promising to save him.
Nearly two years passed and Daxter was still in the same section of the city they arrived in, no closer to his goal than he had started. An elderly man named Osmo approached him with a job as an exterminator in the Kritter Ridder Extermination Company and Daxter took it since he had no form of income and nothing else to do. It turned out the old man was rather desperate for employees since his business was about to go under.
While exterminating the strange Metalbugs that were infesting the city, Daxter began to see how his Ottsel body had its uses. Early into the work he encountered Taryn, a somewhat mysterious woman who would prove very helpful in his new line of work. She doesn’t act like she likes him much, but assisted him in his current task of ridding the construction site of bugs and even gave him her bug spray to help him. He also learned to drive a zoomer...though he demolished his first vehicle on the return and park.
Unfortunately, he got so into his job that he forgot about saving Jak until he spotted him in the back of a prison transport one day. He followed it on a scooter and was cornered by the Krimzon Guard. Thankfully he was rescued by Ximon, Osmo’s son, before they could arrest or shoot him. He also gained a sidekick in the form of a little bug named Tik that he found on a job in an old tanker. Shortly after, he met Brutter, while exterminating in his fish cannery. The Lurker didn’t really leave a good impression on Daxter, but Daxter apparently gained his friendship anyway.
While clearing out the tanker a second time, Daxter learned that the cargo that was infested was meant to go to the palace and decided to use his exterminator profession to get access into the palace. With Tik’s help, he was able to steal a map of the prison and some clothes for Jak. Upon returning to Kritter Ridders Tik was smashed by Kaeden, a man who was determined to shut down Osmo’s company...by whatever means necessary. Daxter chased him outside, and Kaeden activated a detonator which blew up the shop. Osmo survived and Daxter told him he’d get Kaeden for what he did, but first he needed to get to Jak.
With Ximon’s help he broke into the prison where he encountered Kaeden who revealed himself to be a giant Metalbug. After Daxter defeated him, Kaeden warned Daxter that his master would be waiting for Jak and Daxter outside and that the city would fall.
Jak II picks up directly from there, with Daxter finding Jak strapped to a chair and barely conscious. When he managed to rouse his friend, Jak spoke for the first time in as long as Daxter had known him, stating that he would kill Baron Praxis, and transformed into a Dark Eco creature that almost killed him. He caught himself before he did though and they escaped from the prison. Daxter quickly fell back into the role of the shoulder-riding sidekick.
Outside they met an old man named Kor and a quiet little boy. After Jak protected them from the Krimzon Guard, Kor pointed them in the direction of the Underground, a rebel group working to overthrow Baron Praxis..Torn, the person in charge at the time, had them prove themselves on a mission to steal the Baron’s flag in Dead Town before he’d let them join the resistance. Once they were in, they were sent on a number of missions, including destroying an ammo dump. Daxter provided very little help, though he did give a tiny bit of useful information.
On a delivery mission to South Town on the port, they became affiliated with Krew, who was playing every profitable angle in the city, and Sig, his hired gun. As a way to get weapons and information, they worked for him as Wastelanders, though they frequently overstepped the line for what Krew would tolerate. They early found out the Baron was feeding the Metal Heads' need for Eco in exchange for less attacks on the city.
During two separate rescue missions, they met Vin, the extremely paranoid foreman for the Baron’s mining operations and Underground informant, and Ashelin , an old KG friend of Torn. Vin occasionally asked for help in keeping the city’s shield walls up by keeping the Metal Heads from draining the Eco powering them. Ashelin pointed them in the direction of Onin, a blind old seer in the bazaar, because she’d know something about the House of Mar which was of particular interest to the Baron for some reason. Daxter took a liking to Vin, or mostly to teasing him whenever possible, and started trying to flirt with Ashelin.
In Onin’s hut Daxter quickly formed a rivalry with Onin’s interpreter, a Monkaw called Pecker, because of his rather condescending nature...and the fact Daxter poked him while he was hanging upside down, having thought he was dead. But regardless they listened to the tasks Onin gave them and retrieved several artifacts for her..
Later, through Krew, Jak and Daxter took an interest in racing, although this was mostly because it was a chance to beat Erol, the Baron’s second-in-command who originally arrested Jak and to get into the Baron's palace.
The woman Krew referred them to said she wasn’t looking for any new drivers, but that may have been more that she didn’t want anyone Krew sent. She also thwarted any attempts Jak made at flirting and wouldn’t even come from behind her work area to meet them in person. She did tell them she might consider them if they beat the stadium challenge on her prototype Jet Board, but had apparently been hoping they’d fail. In exchange for them leaving, she gave them a possible route into the Baron’s palace.
With some assistance from Vin, the duo made their way to the roof of the palace where they overheard a conversation between Baron Praxis ant the Metal Head Leader. They also learned that the Baron had a trap planned for the Metal Heads and that Ashelin was his daughter. Due to a sneeze from Daxter, the Baron found them, but Jak beat him and they escaped and reported back to Torn. Kor, who was also there along with the boy he kept with him, took a particular interest in the Baron’s plan to betray the Metal Heads but no one noticed.
Later, they were assigned to protect the Sacred Site, in Dead Town, from the Metal Heads and found that it was Samos abandoned and now very rundown hut, meaning they had somehow been sent far into their own world’s future. Things took a turn for the bizarre when they returned to Torn. The Shadow, the man who ran the Underground, had decided it was time to meet them, but it was Samos...only different from the one they knew. He had no idea who they were, but personality-wise was almost exactly the same, even when it came to disliking Daxter, though it was more muted.
The stadium mechanic let them have her Jet Board since they were helping the Underground, though her overall opinion of them didn’t change. It came in handy for several missions later on though.
They were pulled into a Lurker-rescue gig, once again through Krew, shooting down several vehicles carrying Lurkers and then taking them to a trinket stand in the Bazaar that was run by none other than Brutter. Daxter could have been more thrilled by this reunion, but didn’t actively dislike Brutter.
Samos asked Jak and Daxter to escort the boy and his Crocadog to the Power Station where Kor was supposed to be. Afterwards, Krew sent them to drain the Sewers and retrieve an artifact called the Ruby Key from a statue of Mar he’d lost down there a few years earlier. It was actually Daxter who climbed up to get the key, though he did drop it in the attempt.
Vin asked them to close off some open Eco wells at the Strip Mine because the Baron had never planned to pump the Eco into the city and the open wells would attract more Metal Heads. He supplied them with plasmite bombs to do it quickly, but Daxter accidentally armed the lot of them making it so they had to get it done quickly or get blown to pieces.
Back at the Hip Hog Haven Saloon, Daxter wowed Tess, who they had met there a short time before, with an outlandish and purposely exaggerated story of him defeating Metal Heads, and Sig gave them a new mission: to root out some camouflaged combat Metal Heads in Haven Forest.
When they checked back in with the mechanic she blew them off again, still not meeting them face to face. Fed up with her attitude, Daxter, who hadn’t spoken around her up until that point, proceeded to pretty much tell her they didn’t need to be on her race team. Recognizing his voice, she finally came from behind her curtain, revealing herself to be Keira and actually being glad to see him and a little taken aback by Jak’s appearance. They told her about Samos and Jak mentioned he needed to get to the Baron. She agreed to sponsor him on her team because the winner of the Class One race got to meet the Baron. Just before the Class Three race,Krew came to collect the Ruby Key.
Samos and Pecker sent them to the Lurker village at the Dig to obtain a piece of Mar’s Seal from a totem there. It was needed to help locate Mar’s Tomb, where they thought the boy would be able to find a fabled Precursor Stone that the Baron was seeking. Brutter had the second seal piece and let them have it for helping him free the enslaved Lurkers. Onin gave them the third piece after a test, but not before they walked in on Kor telling Onin and Pecker that Samos’ plan wouldn’t work because the boy was no match for the Metal Head Leader. With the completed seal they opened Mar’s Door in No Man’s Canyon, and used the artifacts Onin had sent them after earlier to activate a Light Tower which revealed the location of Mar’s Tomb.
The boy was indeed the heir of Mar and supposed to go into the tomb, but he was too young and the tomb closed the door to prevent him from entering, but not before Jak and Daxter got in to try to get the Stone. After removing a steel rod holding a stone ball in place, Daxter was separated from Jak when he had to flee from the stone and then a giant spider. He escaped into the Precursor Stone’s chamber where he waited irritably for Jak to make his way there. The Baron appeared and got away with the Stone, and they returned to the base to find out that Torn had sold them all out because the Baron had threatened to kill Ashelin. While Torn went to Vin for help to get everyone out of prison, Jak and Daxter broke into the prison. There they discovered two Samos: the younger Shadow, and the older one they remembered.
Back at the stadium, they had a run-in with Erol that was followed by an argument with Keira over whether Erol could be trusted and the way Jak was working plus the rumors surrounding him. Jak stormed off just before the Class Two race was to start, leaving Daxter there. So Daxter raced for their team and managed to win...further impressing Tess and getting praise from Jak, which meant a lot to him. Even though Jak hadn’t raced Daxter was more than happy to share the Class Two victory.
Krew sent them back into the Sewers to escort three of his demolition experts(one being Jinx who appears in Jak 3) back to Mar’s statue to retrieve another artifact. There was a bit of difficulty involving a Metal Head ambush, but they got down there safely for the statue to be blown up and the Heart of Mar Gem to be retrieved. Krew then asked Jak to throw the Championship race because everyone would bet on him to win and if Erol won then it’d make them rich. When Jak refused, Erol approached him, challenging him to a race through the city. Naturally they won, leaving Erol to speed off in a rage.
Samos asked them to retrieve the Life Seed from his old house in Dead Town, then take it to Onin who would prepare for his younger self. Young Samos needed the seed to gain his sage powers. The Krimzon Guard attacked them in the forest while they were delivering the seed to Young Samos, so they had to protect him while he tried to learn what he could from the plants. It was revealed that the Baron was planning to crack open the Precursor Stone and the resulting release of energy would destroy everything.
Keira revealed that she’d been making a Rift Rider to get them home, but hadn’t been able to find the Rift Ring. She also needed the Heart of Mar and an artifact called the Time Map to make the Rider work. At Daxter’s urging Jak awkwardly made up with her and promised to get the artifacts.
They defeated Erol in the Class One championship and got a security pass into the palace. Erol tried to run Jak down as the Baron was about to capture them, instead crashing into some Eco barrels which exploded. Jak and Daxter escaped to the palace where they received a high-level security pass from Ashelin once she learned that her father’s plan would kill them all. She told them her father had left for a weapon factory to meet Krew.
They found and defeated Krew, reclaiming the Heart of Mar. Krew mentioned that he’d sold out the entire city just before they escaped the factory as it exploded, with Ashelin’s help. They returned to the Hip Hog to find Tess musing over a Metal Head Masher game where she’d seen Krew hide something. To further impress her, Daxter beat the game and they received the Time Map from it. While Daxter was further boasting that he’d do the same to any real Metal Heads, a couple came through the door.
After Jak killed them Daxter commented "Where’s Sig when you need him?!" and Tess mentioned that Krew sent him on a last mission to the Underport to open some doors with the Ruby Key. She offered to take the Time Map to Keira while they investigated down there. Vin contacted them with the news that the shield wall was down and Kor was the cause before dissolving into hysterics because Metal Heads were forcing their way into the Power Station.
In the Underport they found out that when Sig opened the door with the Ruby Key Metal Heads came pouring in like they’d been waiting for him. They made their way back to the elevator being pursued by a giant Metalpede, but it got Sig before they got there.
They hurried to the garage to find that the Rift Ring was most likely in the Metal Head nest, and they needed a way to get the Rift Rider there. Brutter appeared with Lurker balloons, having planned in advance for if the Metal Heads attacked. The Samos’s loaded the Rift Rider onto them and everyone escaped while Jak and Daxter kept the area clear of Metal Heads.
Vin contacted them one last time before he died, to tell them they could find Kor at the construction site. There they also found the Baron, and Kor revealed himself to be the Metal Head Leader and dealt Praxis a fatal blow when he refused to hand over the Precursor Stone before flying off to find it. Praxis revealed the bomb that had been intended to crack open the Stone before he died and Daxter disarmed it and retrieved the Stone. Then he and Jak boarded an air train to the Wastelands and the Metal Head nest. There they found out the boy was Jak as a child, defeated Kor, and sent the young Jak and young Samos to the past.
Shortly after, Daxter turned the Hip Hog into the Naughty Ottsel and threw a big party. The biggest surprise was Sig arriving alive and unharmed. Somewhere between the ending of Jak II and the start of Jak 3, he also saw his friends from Kritter Ridder again and revealed how he'd saved Jak.
The peace didn’t last too long though, as Metal Heads took over the section of the city near Haven Forest and KG robots took over the Industrial Sector, resulting in another war, this time inside the city. The city blamed Jak for the fact the Metal Heads were in the city because of his connection to Krew. After the palace was destroyed he was banished to the Wastelands and Daxter went with him, along with Pecker. After they passed out in the desert, they found themselves in Spargus, the city ruled by Damas, where all of Haven’s outcasts ended up. They became Wastelanders after Jak proved worthy to stay. Daxter developed a new pet peeve when Jak was willing to offer him as a betting chip against a car for winning a race.
Early in their stay in Spargus, it became obvious that there was a new disaster in the world. Strange Dark Eco devices were falling around the Wastelands, Wasteland Metal Heads were gathering Dark Eco crystals for someone, and Spargus was preparing for hard times by gathering any usable artifacts and resources. There was also a strange light in the sky that was steadily drawing closer that the Precursor Monks called the Day Star.
Later they found the Precursor Monks’ temple and a glider that Jak dragged Daxter on to reach a volcano, where they’d heard an exploration team had disappeared. Daxter proved useful in making areas accessible for Jak by crossing areas he couldn’t and then making a path for him somehow..
They found a dead monk clutching a piece of Precursor technology powered by a Dark Eco crystal and Daxter moved in to get it, despite Jak's concern for him. When it almost fell on him Jak saved him and then vanished, temporarily leaving a worried Daxter. He was only invisible though and reappeared a moment later and they used this new power to go deeper into the Precursor Temple. There they overheard Count Vegar, the man who banished Jak in the first place, ordering Seem, the monk who told them about the Day Star, to get him access to the catacombs.
A Precursor Idol spoke to them as well, warning of a danger that wasn’t from their world and blessing Jak with his first light power and his Light Jak form.
During one of the arena fights towards earning their full Spargus citizenship, the duo was reunited with Sig, who was honing his skills. When he and Jak refused to fight, they were brought before an angry Damas, who gave them a mission that was their only chance to redeem themselves.
Ashelin contacted Jak, asking that they meet her at the oasis. Daxter acted as though he was fine blowing off her request for Jak to come back but was genuinely surprised by Jak’s refusal to go back. However they returned to the Precursor Temple and, using both the Jat Board and Mar’s seal that Ashelin had brought him, made their way deeper in. Pecker caught up to them with a message from Onin and they used the Precursor subrails to get to an abandoned Eco mine. Pecker went ahead to let everyone know they were back, leaving them to navigate the mines. Vegar was waiting for them at the exit and there they learned that Vegar had attacked the palace to get at the catacombs beneath it. Then he sent a giant Precursor robot after them and left.
Back in the city, they temporarily reunied wih Samos and Keira, then made their way through the Sewers back to the Naughty Ottsel where they hooked up with Torn, and found out that the force behind the KG Deathbots was Erol. Daxter took on a suicidal mission by himself, riding a missile to blow up a barrier as a step toward getting back to Freedom HQ to link up with Ashelin and the others.
At the gun course they were reunited with Tess, much to both her and Daxter’s delight, and learned she was now making guns for the war effort. They also made a point to stop in a couple of more times during the story so Daxter could visit and they could try the gun course.
When they made it back to Freedom HQ, they learned that a dark planet builder was quickly approaching their world. In the forest the learned that the Dark Makers, Precursors twisted by Dark Eco, were the ones arriving and they’d dominate the world and destroy everything upon arrival.
While at the Power Station looking for the cipher key to the KG Deathbot war factory, Jak and Daxter were reunited with Vin...sort of. He’d dumped his brain into the city’s Eco Grid before he died. When he confirmed what they were looking for was in the database, Daxter allowed himself to be uploaded into the system to get it. He and Jak raided the factory to confront Cyber-Erol and defeated him, but he escaped.
Seem contacted them because Erol was attacking the Temple, but by the time they got there he had found what he needed and was gone. Seem gave them a Time Map, convinced that Jak could save the planet, and she thanked Daxter for allowing her to see the face of their creators. At the time he didn’t understand this, but it wasn’t the first time she’d let on that she knew something he didn’t.
Onin and Samos sent them to the catacombs to search for the Planetary Defense Grid along with Pecker, who agreed to meet them there. When they saw how many Metal Heads were guarding the area, Daxter suggested they use the Wastelander beacon to call in help, but it appeared to not work and they continued on. Right after they met up with Pecker, they were ambushed and Pecker fled, but Damas came to their rescue in response to them using the beacon earlier. Unfortunately he died on the way, but not before asking Jak to save the people and find his son, Mar, who they realized was his younger self when Damas showed them the seal he'd be wearing. Vegar appeared and took great pleasure in this revelation, having been the one to take young Jak from Damas at the start. This didn’t go well with Daxter and he urged Jak to go after Vegar.
They made it to the center of and activated the planet’s defense, and Jak was given the privilege of becoming a Precursor. Vegar stepped in and claimed it for himself instead while holding them at gunpoint though..but moments later they learned that the Precursors were Ottsels, like Daxter. It turned out that since all Eco has the Precursors’ essence, Daxter was fortunate enough to be blessed when he fell into the Dark Eco those few years ago. Daxter also got the immense satisfaction of seeing Vegar’s horror at becoming an Ottsel.
He and Jak headed to the Dark Makers’ ship to stop Erol, but he escaped again, in one of the Dark Makers' machines before the ship was destroyed. They escaped the ship as well and were able to defeat him in the desert though. The Precursors offered Daxter his deepest desire as thanks for his bravery, and rather than ask for his old body, he simply asked for a pair of pants like they had and was graced with a pair. When Tess said she wanted a pair just like his, she was turned into an Ottsel as well, finally allowing her and Daxter to pursue a real relationship.
Jak X takes place an undetermined amount of time after the events Jak 3, but not long after. Jak, Daxter and most of their friends had been called to Kras City to hear the reading of Krew’s will. There they met his daughter, Rayne. In drinking a toast, all of them, including Rayne, were poisoned as blackmail to win a combat racing championship for Krew if they wanted the cure. Very little happens here that’s noteworthy for Daxter, although he does become a somewhat adequate grease monkey.
It turns out that aside from winning the tournament for the trophy, Krew staged it so that Rayne would be the new big gang lord in Kras by beating out Mizo, the current gang lord. Naturally, Jak won the tournament and they ended up leaving Mizo to die in much the same way they had Krew. Finding out they'd been played by Rayne was only a momentary blow compared to everything they were celebrating.
