As already noted, FaceTime on iThings is very good for keeping in touch wiht geographically scattered family. You just have to remember to answer it. :-)
The mid-range one, that's essentially an iPhone 5 in a silly plastic housing (dark pink, green, blue, yellow or white. Mine is dark pink). The only annoying thing is that everybody makes cases for the iPhone 5/5s, because the newer/fancier model and the original 5 both have the same shape, while the 5c (c for coloured) won't fit in any of those.
I did get one cheap wallet-style case from a market-stall. Although I find it less comfortable to use that way, it looks less instantly-identifiable as something people want to nick in an ordinary case.
A couple of times FaceTime has let me down by refusing to answer things. The other times, I was either out or refusing to answer video calls before I brushed my hair :-)
I have an iPad - I'd recommend them for the challenged. Maybe someone will buy your Dad one, too? Because getting email onto a Kindle does sound as if it would be hard.
It's the Android-tablet Kindle, not just the reader. He does seem to be finding it not-fun, and I'm mildly surprised that something as key as e-mail is made so hard.
(He looked at the elegance of the iPad and liked it, too)
