For me this whole period has kind of been a trasition. I must admit, when the skinny jean trend started I grabbed a pair (in my defense it was a sunday shopping spree so I was trying on everything at that point), and after failing to make any progress past my knees, I decided skinny jeans were not for me.
However, within this interesting period of time I found myself drifting away from wide-flare as seen circa 2004/2005 and more towards a slim look. Not skinny, but perhaps more seasoned? The main benefit has been the ability to show-off my shoes and perhaps not feel like a 16 year old girl any longer.
For me the skinny jean trend will always be the transition that took me from wide leg to regular/slim leg. I can possibly see a slight boot cut in the future, but I think that's as far as it will go. Check back with me in 5 years.
So I detest skinny jeans... sorry, they just SUCK on girls with any hint of hips...
However, after spending months in Sweden, I have to say, they grew on me if worn tucked into boots. There's just no other way to tuck all that jean material into tight boots unless they are skinny jeans.
