Being a vampire hasn't always been as hard for me as it has for some in my family. Sure, I did the rebellion thing like most everyone did and went against Carlisle and his vegetarian rules for a while, but I never was bitter about actually becoming a vampire. I was just a guy who would have been killed if not for what happened. Plus, I never ( Read more... )

I was infuriated as I made my way into the room where my brothers were being treated. How dare anyone or anything attack my family? Of course, I had no one to blame myself. I was the one who left them to fend for themselves.

The stench of blood made my nostrils flare as I shut the door behind me. Family blood. Their blood. I could barely stand to look at Jasper and then Emmett. Emmett who grinned up at me as if nothing horrible had happened to him.

Clenching my jaw, I walked to the edge of the bed where Jasper lay. "How are you feeling?" I asked, as he gave me a look that clearly said, how do you think idiot? Right. Perhaps it was a stupid question.

"I'll live." His eyes twinkled a bit at his joke. I wasn't amused. Walking over to Emmett, I turned my attention to him.

"What happened? How many were there?" To my father, I forced myself to meet his gaze and ask, "How long before they are well?"

I was thankful to see my son walk through the door, but I kept my attention focused on mending Emmett's wounds. He wasn't hurt as bad as Jasper, but they both needed at least a few days to rest and let themselves get well. Easier said than done with these two.

"Half a dozen or more at least," Emmett said about the numbers. "We went to a spot where we'd heard about some children getting killed. I think they expected someone to show up there because we were ambushed and didn't really have a chance."

I finished up the last stitches to the place on Emmett's arm and looked up to meet Edward's eyes. "Several days at least," I answered and ignored the look of protest from my youngest son. "If you want to be able to get well enough to train and prepare again then you'll listen. Both of you."

I looked back at Edward. "We'll be fine to move then back home tomorrow, though. They'll do better there anyway I think."
