i bought new pants today. i hate buying new pants!!!!!!!!!!! trying them on takes the most effort out of anything you can possibly try on. i dunno if i'm just lazy or if i'm in a hurry, but i don't take my shoes off when i'm trying new pants on. unless they're slip ons or something. maybe that's why i hate trying them on? well, anyway, it was a lot of trouble.

i'm going to do homework now then go to a show with rammer, but i made a cool graphic... and then i made a cool tutorial.

before i get started, you should know that REAL vectors are made in illustrator or macromedia flash, but for those of us who are more comfortable in photoshop, here's how to use the pen tool.

ALSO! you can use this image if you want, but only if you let me know, and please don't direct link!

first, get acquainted with your pen tool. this tool is the most precise selection tool in photoshop.

it looks like this:

open the photo you want to trace & select the pen tool.

now, these next two things are very important! when using the pen tool, you have the option of making a shape, or a
path. make sure you make paths and not shapes. you can find this option on the top tool menu bar. it looks like this:

the second important thing is... your paths window. this window works just like your layers window. everytime you make
a different path, create a new path! without naming your path, or making new ones, the paths you create will overwrite each
other and you won't be able to edit it later if you wanted.

if you can't find your paths window, go to "window >> paths" and it will pop up.

now you're ready to trace. for best results, zoom in to your photo as much as you can. to begin, just point and click.
before you release your mouse, curve the anchor just a liiiiitttle bit. and do that every time you make an anchor.

anchors are the dots that show up after you've clicked in the desired spot.

once you're done tracing, make sure to close your path. to do this, just click back on the anchor point you started
with.

your path might look a little edgy. which is fine.

to curve your anchors so that they're smooth, use your direct selection tool. it's the arrow that's white, not black, and
it's right above your pen tool.

click on the path you want to edit. anchors and "handle bars" should appear. to curve an anchor point, click on the black dot
on the handle bars and drag. you might have to mess around with them to get the precise curve (if you aren't experienced with it).

after your photo is traced, right click on it and "make selection..."

after you've made your selection, go back to your layers window and create a new layer, then fill it in with your paint bucket.

that's all! good luck.

p.s. i notice that A LOT of kids usually make their "vectors" with white faces and no detail. that's so 5 months ago. get awesome. and/or an imagination!
