Matt took a deep breath and glanced anxiously around the room at his gathered colleagues. He hoped they'd done enough and they all seemed to be nodding in agreement. All except Lester.
“But can you be certain that by destroying Philip's infernal machine you've changed things?” he said.
“Well, as certain as I can be without actually going back to the future to see for myself.”
Connor let out a snort of laughter and everyone glared at him. He had a wide grin on his face, oblivious to the fact it was completely inappropriate for the moment. Abby gave him a kick under the desk and his smile dropped as he looked at her, hurt and confused. “What?”
“This is no time for jokes, Connor.” Abby hissed under her breath, aware that everyone was still staring.
“Matt started it. You know... back to the future.... 'where we're going we don't need roads!'”
Abby closed her eyes and willed the ground to open up. Sometimes she really could cheerfully strangle Connor, and this was one of those times.
“Come on, Abby! You've seen that film with me at least a dozen times. You know the one I mean....”
“Yes, I do know the one you mean!” Abby snapped. “Because every time we sit down to watch it, you start ripping it to shreds and analysing it, just like you do with every other film about time travel or dinosaurs. Just for once, it would be nice to ...” She stopped. Matt, Becker, Emily, Jess and Lester were all looking at her with amused expressions. She felt her cheeks burning as she shrunk down into her chair. Connor suddenly realised what was happening and opened his mouth to say something, then changed his mind and decided it was probably best if he kept quiet.
“Oh, don't mind us,” Lester said. “I would hate to think that something as unimportant as debriefing the team after saving the world from the apocalypse is interrupting your domestic arrangements.” He sniffed then cleared his throat as both Connor and Abby muttered apologies and tried to focus back on Matt.
“If this is what they're like now,” Lester said under his breath to Matt “Lord help us once they're actually married.”
At those words, Connor stole a sheepish glance at Abby and smiled. She returned it with a reassuring smile of her own and under the desk she gave his knee a squeeze to let him know all was OK.
