Hey, in 2030, we'll probably invade Canada to take over the Athabascan Tar Sands to feed our oil habit.
The incompetence of the Clinton and Bush administrations in a) not implementing a slowly-scaling gas tax of significant size and b) not vastly increasing our strategic oil reserve in the Gulf Coast salt domes(reaching a 6 billion barrel capacity was definitely feasible and easily financeable with a scaling gas tax) during the 1995-2003 time period has been a major political gripe of mine for over a dozen years. It's really remarkable how shortsighted our country and its leaders have been- remarkably stupid and ignorant too, considering that some people still think we can drill our way out of the problem.
Perhaps the best sign of my cynicism about our energy policy is that I think it's good that we haven't authorized drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge not because I care about the animals, but because every year we delay drilling there allows us to save that oil for when we'll need it more in 30 years.
