Here's a question.

What constitues as a coat or jacket?

Because my definition seems to Be very different from everyone else (and by everyone I just mean my brother in law and Jamie).  Is this because I'm Asian or just delusional?

I use them interchangeably, but I think that's just because I'm Chinese and we use the same word for both.

But in English, I think jacket's a really thin button-up/zip-up attire while coats are the thick ones you wear to ward against the winter cold.

Yah, I use coat and jacket interchangeably as well.

But damn. So coat/jacket is considered something that has a button or zipper?

What if, for example, you have a hoodie that has a zipper? This is where the great debate stemmed from. I consider that a hoodie (or sweater with a hood) and not a coat/jacket.
