Eyepatch was dead. Of all the people Moon knew, Eyepatch was the last one he expected to disappear and it was affecting him more than he thought possible. He'd already gotten drunk and run out of alcohol in the house, so he headed out to the Bazaar, for lack of anything better to do.
He wasn't entirely sober, so it was no surprise that he bumped into someone while he was out. A girl knocked into him and before Moon could snap anything at her, she was gone. She had dropped something against Moon's shoe, and when he looked down, he saw a shining gem in the dirt. A memory crystal.
Gingerly picking it up, he was careful not to touch the glowing center and slipped it into his pocket, suddenly in a hurry to get home. Once there, he made sure that Apple wasn't around, and sat on the sofa to watch whatever the crystal decided to show him. At least it would take his mind off of Eyepatch's disappearance.
---
He couldn't hear anything at all, but his attention was currently being held by a man in flowing robes sitting on a rock before him. The man had white skin and long hair and was smirking with eyes closed. Moon saw his pointed ears - youkai, his brain supplied - and nails elongated into claws. Was he an enemy?
To Moon's right, he saw Smoke, and to his left, the other man that Smoke must have talked about before, the one who once called himself West. Meatbun was nowhere to be seen, a fact that made Moon's stomach twist. This man had done something to the fourth member of their group.
The youkai was speaking, and although Moon couldn't hear him, he could almost sense the mockery and sadistic glee dripping from those words. This man was toying with them, and enjoying every minute of it.
Moon had had enough, and clenching his gun, brought the barrel up to point directly at the man. He was saying something too, something that the youkai found amusing. Although Moon couldn't hear the shot, he felt the recoil of the gun, and a bullet hole emitted smoke near the youkai's feet. He had missed on purpose - a warning shot, but it didn't seem to faze their enemy in the slightest. The man must have said something more inflammatory, because Moon shot again, this time directly at the youkai, who dodged in a flash of movement.
The youkai man was still smiling, still mocking, as he snapped his fingers. It was a command, and then hundreds - no, THOUSANDS - of centipedes began to swarm Moon, Smoke, and West. Skin crawling, Moon could feel their little legs on every inch of him, even through his robes. He hated insects. Hated, hated, HATED them. They were crawling, biting, so many of them, if Moon wasn't careful he'd start to panic.
They covered him up to mid-chest, immobilizing him like a living, moving straitjacket. He couldn't fire his gun to stop them from crawling. Next to him, the brown-haired man slumped over. Had the insects bitten him to death already?
The youkai grabbed West by the chin, still smirking. He was saying something, something that caused the other man's eyes to go wide with shock. Moon struggled against the insects but nothing was happening.
West was more successful. He broke out of the centipede trap and shot his fist out to punch the youkai in the face. He missed and was hit instead, the youkai slamming him into the ground and holding down his head. Smoke yelled something, but Moon was focused on other things.
His mouth was moving rapidly, as if chanting something under his breath. Finally, the youkai noticed him and Moon said something to him, disgust evident. He almost couldn't feel the centipedes anymore...
And then everything exploded around him in a burst of power and light. Long scrolls surrounded him, covered in writing that looked just like that of the fabric he'd received for his birthday. It dissolved the insects and stretched out beyond what Moon could see. This was an ability much more powerful than the handgun.
While the youkai man was blinded by the light from the scroll, Smoke's weapon - a long, bladed chain - cut through the light and lopped the youkai's arm off. He stumbled back, clutching the stump.
Were they close to defeating the enemy?
----
Moon's hearing returned as the memory crystal faded and he was transported back to his living room and sofa. Immediately, he stood up and went to his bedroom, where he was keeping the scroll in a box under his bed. He still didn't understand the writing scribbled on it, but it was as important as he'd originally thought and apparently, extremely powerful.
If only he could find a way to unlock that power...
