fallen angel frozen heart ;;
~~~
“So,” she says slowly as her heels click loudly against the polished linoleum floor of the room. “This is where we’ll be staying?”
Yifan swallows the sudden influx of spit in his mouth. “Well yeah,” he scratches the back of his neck awkwardly - an obvious sign of uncertainty. “I mean, it doesn’t have to be permanent or anything if you don’t want it to be. I could find a better place for you in time to come. It’s just that,” he hesitates, searching her face for any sort of indication. “This is the best I can get for now, given the circumstances.”
He finishes off softly, playing idly with the hem of his cashmere sweater. Her face was a carefully painted picture of blank indifference, showing and betraying no signs of emotion, save for the expression of loss and sadness in the depths of her eyes. A scary blankness. An expression that has been eating away at his soul for a month and counting.
She looks at him for a brief moment before silently shaking her head, black waves that cascaded down her back swaying gently with the gesture.
“It’s alright, this will do just fine,” she answers his unvoiced question quietly, making her way towards the open balcony. “You did a great job in finding the place, don’t worry.”
He counts her staccato footfalls in the quiet of his mind as she steps past the sliding glass door and into the balcony.
Click. Click. Click.
He notes absently that the footsteps were in time to the beat of his heart.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
He watches on with an unreadable expression as she leans forward and over the railing, her pale slender fingers curled around the cool metal bar, lifting her face up to the heavens where stars twinkled down merrily, the soft gentle beams of moonlight casting an almost-luminous glow to her skin - her eyes closed and a faint smile at the edge of her red lips.
She looked ethereal. Like an angel sent down from up above.
-
Yifan takes in a breath and makes his way to stand by her side. He reaches out a hand and places it on her shoulder, giving it a light squeeze.
“Yixing? Are you…” he trails off - looking for an appropriate word. “Are you feeling alright?”
He watches as she slowly opens her eyes and exhales through her parted lips, her breath condensing slightly in the cool and frigid autumn wind. “Of course I am,” she says quietly - looking ahead into the darkness. “Why? Did you think otherwise?”
Dropping the hand from her shoulder, Yifan replies straightforwardly. “Yes, I did. How could I not?”
“Why?”
The simple one-worded question had his mind reeling from all the possible reasons he could give.
“You’re not smiling anymore,” he says finally - a hint of accusation coloring his words, a note of desperation lacing his tone.
Yixing freezes briefly, her shoulders tensing minutely. The action is fleeting, lasting for only a fraction of a quick second, and if it were anybody else, the moment would go unnoticed.
But it isn’t just anybody, it’s Yifan. And Yifan sees everything.
Yifan senses the very slight shift in the air and sees the stiff muscles in Yixing’s neck. He chooses to wait with bated breath for the girl’s long overdue answer, instead of going ahead with his instinct and to wrap his arms around the slender frame, whispering words of assurance and everything is going to be alrights.
“I’m fine, Yifan. I really am,” Yixing says as she turns around to look at him.
There’s a smile on her face, but instead of feeling appeased, Yifan’s heart clenches beneath his ribcage as he sees how forced and fake the uplift of her lips are, when his eyes fall upon the blank look in Yixing’s eyes.
“Yixing,” he murmurs - hand coming up to caress a smooth cheek, thumb rubbing soothing circles into the porcelain white skin. “Tell me what’s wrong. I can’t stand seeing you so broken anymore.”
Smile falling from her face, her mask of indifference tearing away, Yixing leans into the warmth of Yifan’s hand and whispers.
“I feel like everyone has abandoned me. Pa and Ma, my friends, Donghae…”
Yifan’s stomach lurches unpleasantly. “Yixing-ah, they - ”
She turns her head fractionally to press a kiss into the flesh of Yifan’s palm. “I feel so alone, Yifan. So alone it’s frightening.”
Yifan’s heart skips a beat. He takes in a sharp breath and chokes out, “Y-you..why are you -”
But before he can complete his sentence, Yixing is on her tip-toes and looking straight into his eyes with her teary orbs, her hands on his broad shoulders.
“You’re all I have left,” she breaths out right before closing the distance between their faces and pressing her warm smooth lips gently against Yifan’s cold chapped ones.
“The only one I have left,” Yixing murmurs as she slowly breaks apart and lowers herself, gaze never leaving Yifan’s face, a lone solitary tear falling from the dark pool of her eye, down a pale cheek, and to its imminent death. “You cannot leave me, Yifan.”
“Promise me 哥; you have to promise me that no matter what happens, you won’t leave.”
“I won’t let you.”
-
Yifan’s insides remain frozen as he watches Yixing turn and head back inside.
He counts the footsteps.
Click. Click. Click.
It’s no longer the same as his heartbeat.
ThumpThumpThump.
-
Yifan watches silently as Yixing walks away.
He watches his sister’s retreating back and feels cold dread settle in the pits of his stomach.
-
Yixing is an angel, no doubt about that.
A fallen angel.
