The Perfect Show!

An interesting thought occured to me the other day. Using the four marching shows from our days in high school, Carmina Burana, Theater Works, Dance Movements and International Variations, what are the best four tunes? To make my perfect marching show, I tried to use one piece from each show, giving the Perfect Show four tunes: an opener; a ( Read more... )

I'll work through it backwards-i love candide overture(by the way, my freshman year's Candide was my all time favorite) and i loved that as a closer, so im kinda biased about my agreement there. I loved Lento (forgot the name till you described it), and i tend to like ballad's being third in a four part show (Iv seen it second and it was odd). Didnt get to really see International Variations, so..cant comment, but itd have to be increadibly good to beat out Westphalen Choral and battle scene, which was fantastic (I misspelled all of that Im sure. ) and O Fortuna is pretty cool. I must say, Im still stuck on my freshman year...its the one show where at the drop of a hat, I could sing the tune to each peice for you without hesitation...Candide just has perfect parts to go with the whole marching show...but anywho, thats my opinion...

You need to hear that Korean Variations piece. It sounded like a closer in itself. I could never listen to that from the podium without goosbumps. When the brass goes into duple time and the woodwinds into triple time all at once...Oh god. Orgasm. Musical sex. The 1998 Candide show doesn't count. I know it was good. I watched it several times. But it doesn't count. Not because the other shows were better (though Theater Works was), but because it's my game and I made the rules. Thanks for your input, I really do appreciate it, despite the badgering above.

Lets see, O Fortuna kicked some major ass indeed. I'll totally go with that one. I love Variations on a Korean Folk Song, so yeah. That one works out very nicely. As for Lento, I can't remember it for the life of me, so I'll have you sing it to me sometime, sorry bud. And the closer, Candide was the shi'ite! So I'm pretty much going to have to agree with you on the whole thing. Very nice job mang!

I'm going to have to disagree with you on Korean Folk songs. I hated that show. Pretty much the entire show sucked. The closer from O, Fortuna would be a nice closer. Then move Candide to the second song. It didn't have a definite "This is the end of the song" feeling, so it can therefore go second. I'll stick with the opener. Lento was gorgeous stick with that. Just changing Korean Folk Song in my humble, but accurate, opinion would be good.

The Carmina Burana Closer was probably the worst, in my opinion. The drill writing was dull, and the actual music was... let's just say that it was not Millican's best work. He probably thought that we couldn't handle anything more difficult. It is, if I remember, about 12 charts. And the baritone part was just terrible. Sustain that C for how many counts? If I remember, it's 96 counts long. Woo. And I totally disagree with you're placement of Candide Overture as a second piece? Yuck. It has such a closer feel. And as for International Variations, I agree that it was a boring show. Only slightly more interesting than Dance Variations. But Variations on a Korean Folk Song is fantastic. Three distinct different sections, and probably one of the most difficult pieces that the M100 ever tackled, both in musical content and in drill, at least while we were there. You didn't have the same vantage point for that tune that I did. Goosebumps. Every time.

Or course we do! This is Pretona and I will be doing eventually. We're both music majors well on our way to being able to put our bands on the field and kicking ass!
