It was summer. And it was hot.
Shishido had been rudely shaken awake at 7am that Saturday morning for a run, then dragged all over Tokyo buying stupid stuff for his stupid boyfriend’s new apartment without a break, and had just played tennis four hours straight in 90°F.
That grassy bank next to the courts with a big leafy tree was just too tempting.
Shishido had been eyeing it for the past half hour, so when the tiebreak finally ended Shishido grumpily sent his new doubles partner off to get water from the fountain, because, yes, he was fine and he just wanted a DRINK and could he stop acting like Shishido was about to pass out because Shishido would NEVER pass out.
And as soon as Saeki was out of sight Shishido threw himself down on the ground and passed out.
The low hum of midday traffic drifted somewhere off across the park, too far away to touch Shishido’s patch of shade under the branches. There was a distant jingle of the ice cream van and the sound of voices swelled and faded as other players left the courts.
Shishido kept his eyes shut because he didn’t think he could open them anyway: the world was muted and warm and the grass had recently been cut. Loose blades were probably sticking to the back of his sweaty shirt, and that would be lame when he stood up, but turning his head into the ground it smelt fresh and sweet and Shishido smiled.
"Beautiful,” came Saeki’s voice, and Shishido immediately found the energy to scrunch up his face. “Heh.”
The rustle of tennis uniform and a brief shadow passing across Shishido’s eyelids told him that Saeki was sitting down next to him, probably in that stupid Indian-style all his team seemed to copy from that weird, old man.
Shishido felt his cap pulled gently from his head where he’d angled it low over his eyes and something lightly touch his hair. “I got water.”
Shishido felt that pang of thirst again he’d had all game but been too stubborn to cave to. He made a small noise and blindly reached out a hand. It collided with Saeki’s knee.
“Snuffle-snuffle like a hedgehog.”
Shishido smacked his knee and opened his fingers expectantly. He wasn’t expecting the sudden cascade of water over his head.
He sat up spluttering and dripping wet. “DON’T DO THAT!”
Finally opening his eyes and frantically shaking the water from his hair, Shishido’s first impulse was to dart looks all around to make sure no one was watching or laughing.
The only one watching and laughing was Saeki.
“I knew you were tired. Why didn’t you just say?”
“I’m not tired,” Shishido muttered, not looking at him straight. He spotted the half empty water bottle on the grass and grabbed it quickly, taking a long needy drink. When he put it down he felt a lot better and looked at Saeki. He was watching him quietly and still had one hand out of sight.
“What have you got?”
“What makes you think I have something?”
Saeki was smiling now and Shishido paused. Then he held the rest of the bottle over Saeki’s head.
“Tell me.”
“Come here.”
“I’m already here!”
“Closer.”
“You’ll tip something on me.”
“I wouldn’t waste this.”
Shishido teetered the bottle some more. “I’ll do it.”
“Okay,” Saeki sounded amused. “I’ll show you.” He presented a chocolate ice cream cone in front of Shishido’s nose.
“You bought one?”
“It’s hot and they have ice in the name.”
“I know that,” said Shishido, eyeing the cone. “But you bought one.”
“For you,” Saeki tilted his head and drew the cone back towards himself. “Unless you don’t want it.”
“I never said that,” Shishido lurched forward a little on his knees and caught himself on Saeki’s shoulder. He could feel the heat through Saeki’s shirt and suddenly realised most of the water was gone and Saeki’d been doing the same things as him all day with just as little refreshment.
“Hm. We could share.”
Saeki’s eyes lit up. “Yeah?”
Shishido clenched his fingers in his shirt and shook his shoulder a bit- “Don’t make a big deal about it”- and leaned forward to take a bite of the scoop. Saeki held the cone very still, but as Shishido went for another bite indecipherably drew it closer each time until Shishido finally noticed he was inches from Saeki’s face with a half-eaten scoop of chocolate ice cream between them. “Hey-”
With tennis reflexes Saeki lowered the cone and caught Shishido’s cool mouth with his own before he could say another word.
After a few long moments, Shishido drew back and Saeki smiled. “I don’t feel so tired anymore.”
“Hm,” Shishido picked up his hat and bundled it on his head, blaming the summer heat for his cheeks. “Yeah, I could play a few more games before dinner.”
So they did.
