Title: The Things We Can't Control
Author:
prettyorianna
Pairing: Akame.  Others to be added later.
Rating: NC-17.
Genre: crime drama au
Beta by: my cat Gemma.  okay, seriously, nobody
Disclaimer: I don't own KAT-TUN, any of its members, any other JE people.  I write this for fun and for other fans of these fine folks.  But don't steal my
plots, mmkay?  I put a great deal of time into them except for when I'm randomly spastically spitting words onto a page.  But I value those too...

Summary:  Two criminals with vastly different styles meet by chance one day.  Can they work together or will they end up destroying each other?

Author's Note:  Present!Kame.  Yay!  Man, that first bit, I almost cried writing it... which is probably why it isn't longer.  Normally that means it WOULD be longer but I'm just drained and couldn't sustain it.  So I hope it turned out okay anyway.

BANNER BY DESHISORABA!!

Warning:  This gets graphic often occasionally, containing at the very least foul language, character death, nefarious crimes, rape, etc etc.

Chapter 41 ~A New Headache~

Much as he didn’t want to wake Tatsuya up, Kame really had no place other than the office to talk in private with Ryo and Junno.  Sighing, he asked them to follow him.

Knocking on the door to let Tatsuya know he was about to come back in, Kame turned the knob and quietly asked, “Tatsuya?  Are you asleep yet?”

“No,” came the response.  “I keep seein…” but Tatsuya stopped mid-word as Kame and the other two men stepped into the office.  His mouth fell open and he just stared.

“What’s wrong?” Kame asked, looking back the way they’d come from.  He couldn’t see anything.  Just Detective Nishikido and Junno.  Well, he was there too, but he seriously doubted he’d rendered Tatsuya speechless like that.

But it seemed that Tatsuya wasn’t the only one who froze.  Junno had as well and was staring back at Tatsuya like he’d seen a ghost.

So they did know each other after all…  Kame had meant to ask Jin but in the rush to plan and in dealing with the rescue and later with Yoko, it had completely slipped his mind.

“Uepi…” from Junno, barely louder than a whisper.

Tears streaming down his face, Tatsuya responded with, “Iriguchi... deguchi... Taguchi desu?”

“I thought I’d never see you again…” and now Junno was crying, too.  “Oh, look what they did to you!”

“I’m so sorry!  Please forgive me!  I thought…” Tatsuya’s voice was shaking.  “I shouldn’t have believed him!  I never should have believed him!  Junno!”

And that was all it took.  Junno flung himself past Kame, crossing the small office in almost one leap to throw his arms around Tatsuya, who immediately started sobbing.  Junno kissed him on the cheek, “I never,” and on the forehead, “blamed you,” other cheek, “Never!”

And things just continued like that.  More kisses, more apologies.  It was incredibly awkward standing there, witnessing it.  It seemed more like the sort of moment you’d want privacy for, though at the same time, both Tatsuya and Junno seemed to have completely forgotten they weren’t alone in the room anyway.  But before Kame had a chance to leave, Nishikido gave a small cough next to him and said, “Junno?  We still have to-”

“You do it.  I don’t care anymore.”  Junno didn’t even turn around.  “I just don’t care anymore.”  He helped Tatsuya (who had finally managed to stop sobbing) to his feet and the two of them left the office together.

All Kame could do was blink a few times, trying to get rid of those not-quite tears that had threatened to fall as he witnessed the reunion.  He didn’t know what went down between those two before (though chances were good that Papa K was involved) but something in what he’d just seen almost felt like the universe righting itself.  That…

Well, frankly, it was perhaps one of the most astonishing things he’d ever seen.  God knows he’d seen enough of the other end of the spectrum.

But the odds on this, they had to be astronomical.  There were other fences in the city than just Junno and then you had to factor in the fact Jin would had to have mentioned Tatsuya in front of him when they went to buy the equipment…

Maybe Kizuna actually helped more than Kame had been lately lamenting.  Maybe…

“Excuse me?”  Another small attention-getting cough.  “We have business to discuss?”

“Right…” and Kame closed the office door.  “So, what is this about, then?  Am I right to think it has to do with the recent robbery?”

“Yes.  It seems you have a problem.  Either you need to get your men in line or someone has it in for you.”

Kame gestured for the detective to sit in the office’s one chair, while he leaned against the wall.  “What do you mean?  Get my men in line how?”

“Would Kizuna go behind your back?  Maybe some of the younger members taking initiative without first running it by you?”

“No.  Everything goes through me, sooner or later.  It’s true, some jobs get done before I hear about them, but I do hear about them.  They’re all reported to me and we have rules and all that.”

“But could it happen?”

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Detective Nishikido looked him up and down critically for a few moments before finally saying, “The street’s full of gossip over who hit Junno’s and, well, they all say it was you.”

“What?!”  That definitely got Kame’s attention.

“Normally I’d trust my sources but Junno, despite being a bit… well, naïve in some ways, isn’t actually an idiot.  He doesn’t believe it so I looked deeper.  Most of the people in your territory don’t believe it.  They say you may be a gang but you keep out the drug dealers and the other gangs and you keep the street brats from stealing from them.  They overlook the rest but they do know the rest exists at least.  They accept that as fact and even knowing that, they don’t think this is one of those times.”

Well, that was comforting to some degree, Kame supposed.  But he was still unsettled by the news.

Nishikido continued with, “It turns out that your territory isn’t the only one having this problem and the reason nobody has heard of it is because, well, the territories of other gangs aren’t nearly as willing to overlook their presence.  No…” and he trailed off for a moment, “Kizuna seems pretty unique…  But it seems that traditionally forbidden targets, targets the gangs rely on for business, have been hit in several territories with accompanying rumors the gang itself is responsible.”

“In other words, someone is trying to destabilize gang support networks and is using the gangs’ notoriety against them to do so?” Kame could feel the start of a headache, right at the temple.  Had he eaten yet?  He couldn’t remember…

“I think so.  But nobody is going to look into it, even if they do believe the gangs’ claims of innocence.  They’re too happy to have the gangs lose power that they don’t care how it is happening.  The very targets they’ve been unable to prosecute, the fences and the weapon and drug dealers, these are who are being hit so the police are perfectly happy to let it keep happening.  And I’ll be honest with you, Kamenashi-san.  This is as far as I’m taking this as well.  This is as far as I can.  Nobody wants this solved.”

Great.  Just great.

“But it is widespread?  I am understanding this?  It’s not just one or two gangs?”

“It is almost every gang in the city.”

“Can you at least get me a list of who hasn’t been hit, so that Kizuna can look into it ourselves?”

Nishikido gave him another long scrutiny, a very judgmental one before finally saying, “Normally not, but for Kizuna…  Can I have your word you won’t use this list to start a gang war?  That’s a lot of paperwork I don’t want to have to do.  Most gangs… but I suppose Kizuna isn’t really the same thing.”

“I give you my word that I will only target the ones responsible and that I’ll keep it off of your direct doorstep.”

“Very well.  Let me get some things together.  Send Tego-nyan around to collect, if you don’t mind.”  And the detective left without another word.

Tego-nyan, huh?  Despite himself, Kame couldn’t help but laugh.  He made a mental note to ask Yuya just how often he went ‘round to the detective’s doorstep.

What now?  He didn’t want to alarm Kizuna.  And, just to be thorough, he was going to have to look into the possibility that some of the members actually were involved.  He hated thinking that.  It was… it was like not trusting them.  That… it just didn’t feel right!

But he was stuck for it.

How, though?  How would he find out if his gang was involved?  If they were in some incidental way… maybe new members who didn’t realize… but it seemed unlikely.  Other than some of the older street kids who had joined officially a couple years ago, all the newer members were rescues like Koki.  And most of Kizuna wouldn’t have the right skill set for the job; otherwise, they wouldn’t have needed Jin for the out-of-town robberies.  These days, Kizuna was very prostitute-heavy around the lower ranks and the upper ranks were very tight-knit.

And, as Kame had recently discovered, Kizuna was not immune to gossip.

So he had no idea what to do and nobody he could ask for advice.

Wait…

Unless…

Would Jin be able to keep his mouth shut?  True, he had a bad habit of shouting about his gun in a public place which would indicate he couldn’t… but on the other hand, he hadn’t said a word to anyone about what went down between them.  Not the kiss, not the scars, not anything Kame had told him about how he got them.  As far as Kame could tell, Jin hadn’t said anything about holding him outside the kitchen when he was crying, either.

Surely that was enough to prove a man trustworthy.

But…

All that aside, Kame couldn’t help but feel he’d trust Jin anyway, even if he had no proof.

And that was just scary all by itself.

A/N:  Well, I'd liked to have given you a longer chapter, but I don't want the stuff from the next scene distracting from the important stuff in this.  So it seemed like a better idea to split it.  Hope you guys liked it (^_^)
