The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 60 ~Whither Away So Hurriedly?~
Damn it! That car had come out of nowhere and Kame jumped backwards to avoid being hit. By the time the car was past, he’d lost sight of Yurina. He continued on in that direction a little longer but he just couldn’t find her.
If she was that slick when she didn’t know she was being followed, he’d hate to have to track her with her knowing he was on her trail.
There was nothing to be done for it that night. Kame reluctantly went back home.
But he couldn’t sleep.
And she didn’t return until nearly three. She looked so tired. And when the bedroom door closed behind her, it sounded like she’d just sunk to the ground at the door and started crying. Kame was torn between trying to respect her privacy and wanting to do something, anything, to get her to stop crying.
Sighing, he walked over to the bedroom door and knocked softly. “Yurina?”
“Go away.”
The lock clicked.
Damn it.
The next morning at breakfast, she was smiling like nothing was wrong. She looked tired but he couldn’t see anything to hint at what she snuck out to do last night. He started to ask but decided against it. She obviously didn’t want him to know so she was only going to lie. He’d just try to follow her if it happened again.
“So… have you got any idea what you want to do now? I mean, now that you’re out?” Kame asked her.
Yurina shook her head. “I mean, I guess I should get a job but I don’t know how. I don’t know who would hire me with my conviction. But my parole officer might be able to help me find something. I have to go once a month for drug testing for three months and as long as I stay clean,” and she gave a small snort, “I won’t have to go past that. If I pop positive, my probation conditions will have a few months added and I’ll have to continue the drug testing. Two strikes, back in prison for a few months.”
“We’ll find you something. Um… do you know how to drive?” Akira and Aoi’s car was still sitting in the parking lot of the burned club.
“I was too young to learn before I got arrested.”
Ah. Good point. “The bus sucks but it’ll get you pretty much anywhere in the city as long as you don’t mind walking a couple blocks on either end of the trip. I’ve got a job at Ito-san’s grocery over on Engels Street that I work in the late afternoons, a few hours most every day. It’s not much, but it’ll feed us, keep the lights on, that sort of thing.”
“I don’t want to just leech off of you.”
“You know it’s not like that. This place is by right yours, not mine. But… it is home for me, the only one I’ve ever known so I’d really like to stay. Plus I promised Aoi-”
“That you’d watch out for me. I know. I swear, those two think I am completely incapable of taking care of myself!” she pouted.
“You could be the most capable woman to ever live and they’d worry. You know that.”
She nodded.
“Hey, did they ever tell you about that time…” Kame started telling some amusing little story and once he’d finished that one, she said she had an even funnier one from when they were all a lot younger. The two of them ended up telling stories on into the afternoon until Kame had to practically run to work to keep from being late.
As best as he was able to tell, Yurina didn’t sneak out that night or the next one. But the night after that, maybe an hour after they’d gone to bed, she was off again.
She lost him unwittingly. Again. God, that girl was crafty, taking circuitous paths and sudden direction changes. It was almost like she didn’t want anyone who saw her to figure out her final destination.
He finally had to admit he wasn’t going to find her that night either and go back home.
It was almost three when she came home that night as well. She locked herself in the bedroom and he could hear her crying again.
The next morning, she was smiling again, just like before, but there was some strain around her eyes that didn’t quite match the smile. She was moving a bit strangely, too.
Wait… was that a bruise?
“Have… have you been fighting?” he asked sharply, looking up from the bruise on her arm that she was desperately trying to pull her sleeve down over after his question.
“Um… no?” but it really sounded a whole lot more like a question than an answer.
Kame’s hand shot out and grabbed her arm. Pushing the sleeve up, he asked, “What’s this, then?”
She let out an indignant shriek and tried to jerk her arm away, which cause her shirt to ride up a bit on the side. There were more bruises there. “Let go of me!” and this time he did.
“Yurina, who did that to you?”
“Fine, I got into a fight! Happy now?” She sounded pissed. “But I gave as good as I got. Er, well, mostly…” she admitted.
“You do know Aoi will kill me if he finds out you’ve been fighting while out on probation, right?” Kame pointed out. “You get arrested, what do you think will happen to you?”
“Well, then, I won’t get arrested! It’s… it’s no big deal. I just…” and she sighed. “I ran into trouble.”
“When you snuck out again last night.”
She rolled her eyes and said, “It’s not sneaking. You’re not my boss. I’m allowed to go where I want when I want and it’s none of your business.”
And she kicked him in the shin and just left the apartment.
Great. Now what?
Over the next two weeks, she snuck out nine more times. He was tracking her further each time but she still always managed to lose him before reaching her destination. Then she’s come home and lock herself back in the bedroom again.
At least things went smoothly when she went to see her parole officer the first time. She passed the drug test (he knew she would) and the parole officer had given her a bunch of information on places that coordinated with the parole board to provide temporary jobs to new releases.
Another week and a half, gone six more times.
Every day that passed she was jumpier and smiled less and less. She got incredibly defensive and would barely look at him. It was so hard, knowing deep in his gut that something was very wrong but being unable to help or even discover what it was. She was hurting and he didn’t just mean from the fights (though it was pretty clear she’d been in two more at the very least). Something was just draining away her strength and leaving her burnt out and miserable.
He had to find out where she was going! That was it; next time she snuck out, he’d follow her and he wouldn’t come home until he found her.
And she did lose him when she hit the warehouse district but he wasn’t leaving until he checked every one of them even if it took all night. Which it probably would.
When he heard her voice coming from the fourth one, he breathed a sigh of relief. Hmm… he needed some place where he could see in, or, failing that, at least hear what was going on. Well, there was a really high window along the side, he could probably just barely see in from it but it ought to do. He scrambled as quietly as he could up the crates below it. Damn. They didn’t really go high enough for him to see. He could hear at least. The balance was a bit precarious but it’d have to do.
“…longer do I have to do this? Please! I don’t like doing this!”
“So you’d rather go back to jail, then? Okay, I’ll send my boys round to that apartment of yours while we sit here and have a nice chat. I’m sure your parole officer will be quite happy to search the place on an anonymous tip.” A man’s voice, one he wasn’t familiar with.
“No! No! I… I’ll do it, Naito-san…” she said.
The man, Naito-san, said something Kame couldn’t quite hear.
“Don’t touch me!” Yurina shrieked.
Damn, he really wished he could see what was going on.
“Aw, don’t be like that. I heard you’re actually a pretty nice piece,” from Naito.
“Who… who told you that?” and she sounded uncertain now. “Stay back!”
Another man’s voice, coming from inside the warehouse also but further away than Yurina and Naito’s voices. “I told him that.”
A loud gasp of surprise. “Abe-san?”
“Ah, you finally learned my name. I’m a little surprised you remember me. You were pretty high at the time but so, so sweet. What’s your poison these days?” the new man, Abe-san, laughed.
“I don’t do drugs.”
“Guess it doesn’t really matter. You know, when I heard Naito had taken my advice, tapped you for running, I just knew I had to come down here. You tried to get me in a lot of trouble. Did you think I wouldn’t find out?”
Yurina’s voice again, so very scared this time, “I… I was…”
Abe’s voice, interrupting her. “I don’t really give a fuck. You tried to send me up and now you’ll have to pay for it, bitch. So pretty… Are you still just as sweet? You know you begged me to stop. Begged us all to stop. Do you remember? You were probably worth ten times the blow I gave that idiot Ryuichi for you. You know, I think I’d like to see you beg again. And I’m pretty sure Naito would just love a taste, too.”
Oh, god… He had to find a way in! Kame scrambled down off the crates as quickly as he could but ended up slipping and landing flat on his back, knocking the wind out of him. As he did his best to get up to his feet, he could hear Naito’s voice yelling rather loudly, “Damn it, she’s just a girl! How many of you does it take? Fine, fine, give me the syringe. Now, get her and hold her still!”
And then he was up on his feet, running quickly but quietly around the warehouse looking for the way in.
Yurina screamed. “Let go of me! No!”
He threw all semblance of caution to the wind. He had to get in there now.
Ah, the door! There!
He could hear Yurina’s loud screams slowly fade into whimpering, “NO NO no no nono…”
“Hmm, let’s just give that a moment to kick in, shall we?” Abe’s voice. “I can’t believe she took four of you down. Really, Naito, are these the best you can do?”
And then Kame was at the door only the door was locked. With as much force as he could, he slammed into it, trying to break it down.
“Bitch, you brought the police with you?” A growl. “Fine, put her in the car. Might as well take her with us now that she’s so much more cooperative.”
Naito’s voice, “What about me?”
“Eh, you know where to find us. Handle your cop problem then come see me. I’ll save you a taste and I won’t even charge you.”
The door! The door! He almost had it!
He could hear the sound of the engine. The door flew open - finally - but the car was already speeding away through the opening garage exit with Yurina in it. Grabbing something long and thin off the ground, he swung it at the nearest person, knocking them out in one blow. He just kept swinging, running on pure adrenaline, until he suddenly realized it was only him and the man who was obviously Naito still standing.
Dropping the bloody pipe, he stormed up to Naito and slugged him as hard as he possibly could. The man dropped.
Naito would tell him where Abe was going. He would. Kame would do whatever it took.
Whatever.
It.
Took.

Chapter 61 ~Distractions and Stories~ A/N: Well, there you go. Bit of a cliffhanger, I know.
But let me just say, I really, really hate Ryuichi and I wish there was some way to punish him further but unfortunately he's dead. He drugged her so he could have her and then once he was done with her, he traded her to a drug dealer/pimp for cocaine. Which is where she got arrested a couple hours later. Her brothers suspected Ryuichi assaulted her but they have no idea about the rest.
