Chapter 73 ~After~

An overwhelming sense of relief spread through Kame as he lay there in Jin’s arms after their lovemaking.  Despite what he’d said to Jin, he had been so scared he wouldn’t handle it.  That… that his past meant he’d never be able to be with Jin (or anyone, for that matter) the way he wanted.  He’d pushed those fears down because he knew there was only one way to find out and it wasn’t like those fears were going to disappear any other way.

But far from panic, he felt this… well, peace.  It was like the whole world just stood still for a while and that all of the problems of his life faded away to nothing.  Because how could anything be wrong in his life if he was in Jin’s arms?

Sighing contentedly, Kame murmured, “I never knew I could feel like this.”

“Hmm?” was Jin’s lazy response.

“I dunno…  Being here with you, it just feels right.  I thought I’d never have this.  I thought I couldn’t have this, not after everything.  But here I am in your arms and it’s like everything will be okay, somehow.  I’m not scared…”  But that wasn’t exactly right, so he added, “Well, I mean, these new things I’m feeling are scary in their unfamiliarity but real fear… I’m just not feeling it.  Not even close.”

Jin laughed and it made his whole chest shake despite the fact that Kame had half of it covered with his own body.  “I did tell you I’m just awesome.  Did I not say that?”

Laughing as well, Kame hit Jin lightly over the head and said, “Oh, there’s absolutely no way you’ll ever get me to admit tha-”

Three loud knocks on the door interrupted him before he could finish his sentence, bringing with them a reminder that the entirety of existence wasn’t really bounded by the four walls of the office, whatever it may feel like.

Oh, god… they’d gotten pretty loud when they were making love.  They were never going to hear the end of it, were they?  Kizuna would tease them horribly.

Before Kame could respond to the knocking, Jin shouted playfully, “Go away!”

Giggling, Kame whispered, “You’re so mean!”  But the moment was over.  Reality was intruding once more and he had to tend to his responsibilities.  “It might be important, Jin.  I have to at least see what they want.”

“Uh-uh.  You’re on the mat.  What about the Mat Rule of I Don’t Give a Flying Fuck?” Jin said in a mock serious voice.

“The what now?” Kame looked up at him, completely confused.

“Ah, the revolution is in such trouble ever since the former leader went senile…” Jin said with a sigh.  But, laughing once more, he said, “I told you that when you’re on this mat, you’re not allowed to worry about anything, right?”

Another three knocks and a somewhat familiar-sounding voice, “Kame-san?  Are you…” Some more talking from a second voice, quiet enough he couldn’t make it out and then the original speaker continued with, “Does it really make that much of a difference what I call him, Honey-chan?  Just let… fine, you can do it.”  Whoever was outside the office did not sound happy at all.

“Just a second!” Kame shouted.  To Jin he added, “I’m sorry, Jin, but I have to.  If you want to be with me, you have to understand that.  My Kizuna family are my responsibility.”  Though the words were hard to say, because, well, he was worried they’d make Jin suddenly realize the horrible mistake he made by falling in love with Kame.

But Jin just smiled at him and said, “I do know that, Kazu-love.  But you can’t blame me for not wanting you to put back on your clothes.  I mean, have you looked in a mirror… ever?”

Nevertheless, Jin handed him back his pants and underwear and the two of them dressed in silence.  Once Kame got his pants on, he walked over to the door and grabbed his shirt off the floor.  He made sure it was completely buttoned once more so that his chest and the scars there were not visible and, casting one more glance in Jin’s direction to make sure he was dressed, he unlocked and opened the office door.

He was not expecting to see Junno and Tatsuya.  He especially wasn’t expecting to see Junno and Tatsuya looking so afraid.

Gesturing them in, he quickly asked, “What’s wrong?”

“We… ah… can’t go home,” Junno said.  He looked tired.  “Papa K’s men were waiting for us.  With big guns.  They’re in my house!  My house!”

Kame and Jin, in perfect unison, “What?!”

Tatsuya nodded as Junno continued with, “I don’t know how they figured it out.  I mean, we didn’t tell anyone outside of Kizuna that I was taking him home with me and I know you guys wouldn’t… I mean, you risk your life to save him so you’re not going to sell him out like… but… they’re at my house!”

First Junno’s robbery.  Then the steady stream of independent drug sellers.  Then the attack on Massu, Shige, and Koyama.  Now this?  Everything leading back to Papa K but what did it all add up to?  What the hell was going on?

Papa K was his father.  He should understand him well enough to figure this out but he just couldn’t seem to put the pieces together into anything that even remotely made sense.  “Start from the beginning?”

But it seemed Junno was too upset (and not just a little outraged) to continue, so Tatsuya said, “I got this, Honey-chan… calm down, ne?” with a small kiss on the cheek to sooth Junno before addressing Kame, “We went out to the park like we used to do.  On the way back, we stopped at the conbini for an early supper but when we started to get close to the house with our food, the door wasn’t locked like it was supposed to be.  Then we heard voices coming from inside the house, very faint.  That’s when I noticed one of Papa K’s vans across the street.”

“We took off running which turned out to be the right thing to do because someone in the van started shooting at us.  Almost got us, too…”  Tatsuya sighed.  “We led them on a wild chase but we finally lost them.  Once we were sure we weren’t being followed anymore, we came here.”

“I mean, I was going to come back anyway in a few days.  I want to join Kizuna or at least help out… but…”

Though he’d seemed more or less fine when they first showed up, Tatsuya looked like he was barely holding himself together.  He was probably afraid of what would happen if Papa K got his hands on him again.  Kame couldn’t blame him for that, though.

“You know you both can stay as long as you like and I promise we’ll get to the bottom of this.”  Kame’s headache was back in full force.  “Koki can get you settled in.  He’s probably with the street kids in one of the Sunday school rooms.  Can you find him or do you need me to go with you?”

Junno was looking at Tatsuya with concerned eyes.  It seemed he, too, noticed Tatsuya’s rapid deterioration.  “We can find him.  Thanks, Kame.  I… I owe Kizuna more than I could ever pay…” he said, pulling Tatsuya into his arms.  “Come on, let’s find someplace to sit, okay?” he murmured to Tatsuya.

Tatsuya nodded and the two of them left the office.

Jin watched his friend leave.  “What the hell is going on?”

“I really wish I knew, Jin.  I really wish I knew.”
