The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 01 ~Another Day at the Bank~
A sudden hand was on his shoulder and the man it belonged to asked in a low voice, “What do you think you’re doing?”
Akanishi Jin turned a bit, sizing up the man who addressed him. Slender, with medium-length brown hair, gorgeous face… he surely wasn’t dressed like bank security. He looked like another customer.
Flashing a confused smile, Jin tried to play everything off. “I’m waiting to see the teller,” he said without a hint of hesitation. And technically he wasn’t even lying. Not really.
“Right…” and in a lower voice, the man asked, “And you always bring a gun to a bank?”
“Are you bank security?” Jin asked cautiously.
“And if I am?”
Oh, good. He wasn’t. If he was, he’d have said it. Not that Jin even thought he was, but he was trying to be careful. “What makes you think I have a gun?” he said as quietly as he could.
But the man held up one finger in front of him. “Had. You had a gun.”
“What?!” Jin exclaimed, a little louder than he intended. Unconsciously he reached for where he’d tucked it, only to find it was no longer there. How had the man managed to steal it without him noticing? “Give it back,” he hissed.
“Only if you leave. I was here first. You go rob some other bank.”
Wasn’t that just his luck? What were the odds that the day he showed up to rob a bank, another man would, too? But… Jin was sure the man wasn’t in the building when he’d done his initial sweep of the room. He was absolutely sure the man had just shown up.
“You lie. I know for a fact you weren’t here when I got here,” he whispered in a huff.
“I’m not arguing that. But I know for a fact you haven’t so much as set foot in this entire building in the last two weeks. Wonder how I know this? Because I spent the last two week casing the place! Go away!”
Jin shook his head stubbornly. “No. This is my bank. I don’t care how many days you sat here; you had your chance and you didn’t take it so give me back my gun or I’ll call security over. There’s another bank across the street. Go there.”
“No, you go there. My plan, the one I carefully put together over the past two weeks, won’t work at that bank. The security is different and I don’t know the schedules of the employees like I do for this place. This is my bank.”
While it was true that Jin’s plan to flash his gun to the teller and have her fill his bag with cash would work equally well at any bank, that wasn’t the point. It was the principle of the thing, damn it! He got there first that morning so this was most definitely his bank and he wasn’t going to back down. Not even if the guy did take his gun…
“If you took my gun that means you now have one. With no serial number, who do you think security will believe? Me, unarmed, or you with at least my gun and possibly more?” Jin taunted. See, it really was the principle of the thing now. It didn’t matter that the other bank was just as good of a target. All that matter was he got there first that morning and the bank was his by right.
The man gave a small chuckle. “While it’s true that they might initially think it’s mine, I’m wearing gloves and you aren’t. I’ll make sure they take us both in and when they dust it for prints, I’ll look like a good guy just trying to save the day by disarming the horrible bank robber before he has time to act!”
Jin swallowed hard. This guy wasn’t playing fair at all! It took a lot of his admittedly limited self-control to not punch the man right then and there. But the other guy was so pretty, it would be like hitting a woman. Where’s the fun in that? He’d probably scream like a little bitch if Jin punched him.
“You don’t understand; I need this money!” Jin frowned.
“You think I don’t? And what was your plan? You figure you’d show up, wave a gun around, and they’d just hand over the money and let you walk out? Seriously, is this your first time?” The man shook his head. “This must be your first time or you’d have noticed me when I disarmed you…”
Great. Now he was being mocked by the little girly-man. Okay, yeah, it was true this was his first time robbing a bank, but he’d hit gas stations and convenience stores before. But the money, he needed it too soon. There was no way he’d get enough money in time like that. His friend was counting on him!
“I wouldn’t expect you to understand.”
Another laugh. “Understand what? You know what? Go ahead. Try to rob the place. It’ll be amusing to watch security swarm you…”
“Give me back my gun!”
More laughter. “No, you look pretty strong. Surely you can do it without the gun.”
The mocking tone made everything the man said sort of sink in Jin’s stomach, forming an uncomfortable knot. What was this guy’s problem? The laughing… it was just too much.
So he grabbed the guy by the collar with one hand and slugged him as hard as he could.
Well, the guy didn’t scream like he expected. He staggered backwards a bit but managed to stay on his feet despite the blow.
“YOU IDIOT!” the man shouted, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth as dropped into a defensive stance. Out of the corner of Jin’s eye he saw everyone around them backing away except for bank security advancing cautiously. “TWO WEEKS WASTED!”
And the man hit him back with much more force than Jin would have thought him capable. So he wanted to play? Fine. Fine. Kid gloves coming off, now! Jin rushed him, tackling him to the ground. “GIVE ME BACK MY GUN, YOU ASS!”
Oops. Probably shouldn’t have said that. It just came out before he could stop it. But he fast found himself not caring about what he said as he and the man fought, both of them giving as good as they got. Jin was bigger, but the other man was faster.
But the sound of gun hammers cocking back stopped both of them mid-swing. Both of the bank’s security officers had their weapons drawn, pointing them straight at Jin and other man.

“God, you’re such an idiot!” Kamenashi Kazuya hissed at the man who ruined his two weeks of work. They were really counting on this score! Things had been so tight recently in the gang. The lost souls of the street needed someone to protect them, help keep them safe and fed. To help keep them alive. But the money was running out…
“Hands in the air, both of you!” from one of the security guards.
Leaning up very closely to whisper in ear of the man who had him pinned to the ground, Kame said, “If I tell you where your gun is, will you promise to not shoot me?”
Whispering back, his lips so distractingly close to Kame’s ear, the stranger said, “Okay, but once we’re out of here, you’re stuck with me until I get the money I came to get!”
The man’s breath tickled, sending a shiver through him. Well, Kame supposed it was better than getting shot or, worse, arrested. “Fine. Slide your arm around my waist under the coat; it’s at the small of my back.”
“What about you?”
“Knife.”
“Ah…” and Kame held his breath while the stranger who’d spoiled all of his carefully-laid plans slid his arms around him. He hated being this close to some man he’d just met but it couldn’t be helped, he supposed. But the two of them were definitely going to have sit-down once they got free from here.
“Hands in the air!” the guard shouted again.
“I’m trying, but this lout’s got me pinned! Can’t you pull him off or something?!” Kame shouted back.
The stranger on top of him hissed, “Oh, that’s just great…” while Kame merely shrugged, sliding his hand across his stomach to draw the knife he had sheathed at his side.
One of the guards walked up to the two of them, reaching down in an attempt to get the man’s collar to pull him off, but the other guard stayed in place. Well, Kame would just have to hope the stranger could handle the man at his back. He’d take care of the one still aiming a gun their way…
Then the guard finally had a hold of the annoying stranger, pulling him up. In a rather impressively smooth motion, Kame watched how the man used the momentum to his advantage, elbowing the guard hard in the gut, causing both of them to fall backwards so that the full weight of the fall was on his elbow which was wedge firmly against the man’s abdomen. The gun flew out of the guard’s hands on the way down and the second guard reacted, swinging his gun around to bear on the falling pair.
But Kame was quicker, pushing himself up enough to throw the first knife. It caught the man in the hands. It wasn’t properly weighted for throwing, so it didn’t actually impale the man’s hand, but it did knock the gun out of his grasp. Kame was on his feet almost immediately, drawing his second knife.
“If you’re coming with me, better make it fast!” and he bolted for the door without so much as a backwards glance.
Indignant shouting followed by the sound of the gun going off. Had he shot the guards? Kame didn’t want to stop to find out.
His getaway driver obviously didn’t expect him to come rushing out so soon, not like that. He started to get out of the car, a questioning look on his face.
“Start the damn car, Koki!” Kame shouted as he dashed across the street. His friend only took a moment for it to all sink in that something had gone terribly wrong and they needed to be gone. Slamming the door back shut again, he started up the car.
Kame went to pull the back door open when he felt a hand grab the back of his shirt.
“You’re not trying to ditch me, are you?” the asshole who’d fucked everything up asked. He sounded furious.
“Fine, whatever, just get in the car!” Kame shouted. Seriously, the man was going to get them all killed! But Kame had to admit, having an extra gun in the car would be a good thing if they weren’t able to get away before the cops arrived.
And then the three of them were in the car and it sped forward, turning suddenly here and there, following the convoluted path Koki already committed to memory. And when they got as far as the park near the bridge, the three of them piled out of the car, switching to a second car they left there earlier. He didn’t want to risk having the getaway car right in front of headquarters, so instead he’d left their car near the park and stolen one.
“Are we really taking him with us, Kame?” Koki asked as he pulled out of the park and onto the bridge.
Sighing, Kame said, “I guess so. Would be a shame to get blood all over the seats.”

What was he going to do now? If he didn’t come up with that money in a week, his friend would be the one to suffer. Jin promised him he’d get the money. He promised!
Okay, that might not mean much to some people, but it did to Jin.
“Are… are you crying?” the man Kame asked him.
Rubbing his eyes and sniffling, Jin frowned. “No, I’m not.” Okay, that might be a tiny bit of a lie. But it really wasn’t any business of his. “You don’t worry about me. You just worry about getting me the money you just cost me.”
“The money that I cost you?” Kame shrieked indignantly. “Do you know how many people will go hungry tonight because of you?”
“Wa-whut?” That wasn’t exactly what Jin expected to hear. “What are you going on about?”
“You selfish, arrogant idiot!” Kame shouted and Jin’s head jerked to the side, his cheek stinging from the slap.
“No, but you don’t understand! I need…” Jin started, angry once again.
“You know, I don’t really care what you need. Is there someplace you’d like us to drop you off?” Kame glared at him, fingering that knife he was still holding.
“I told you, you’re stuck with me until I get that money.” Or until next Friday. Whichever happened first. But Jin didn’t say that part out loud.
“If we take you to headquarters, you won’t be able to leave. You’ll be trapped there, you understand? And I’ll have that, thank-you-very-much…” Jin’s eyes followed Kame’s hand as it wove back and forth, leaving him confused…
Until Kame’s other hand darted out to snag the gun from his hand.
“God damn it! Give that back!”
“You’re way too easy to disarm. Letting you keep hold of a gun is a disaster waiting to happen.” Kame clicked his tongue. “I need an answer now. Do we drop you off somewhere or take you to headquarters?”
But was there really a choice?
It was very likely his friend would be dead in a week if he didn’t find the money.
“I told you, you’re stuck with me until I get that money.”
Shaking his head, Kame said, “Okay, Koki. You heard the man. Take us home.” Then addressing Jin once more, “Do you have a name?”
“Just call me Jin.” No way in hell he was giving that man his full name.
“Fine. You can just call me Kame then.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
“That’s just fine.”
But from the driver Koki, “Don’t make me come back there.”
“Hai, hai…” from Jin and Kame simultaneously, even down to the sigh.
And eventually they did stop.
“What is this place?” Jin asked, looking around in amazement as he stepped out of the car. He had honestly expected something a bit, well, more gangsta. Not an old church. He hadn’t expected to find gang members handing food out to the whores and the homeless from the area.
“This is home for a lot of us. For you, too. At least for now.” And Kame nodded towards a man leaning against the building. “Lock him in the office for now.”
As Jin was being led inside, he heard Kame speaking. He sounded so sad and so very tired, “I’m sorry, Yuya. It got… complicated. How long will our supplies last?”
“At this rate? Two days. Want me to half the ration size?” from another voice, young -sounding, who Jin supposed was Yuya.
“No, not yet. I’ll… come up with something.”
Great. Now Jin felt like the bad guy. How did things end up this way? And how was he supposed to save his friend now?

The story continues:
Chapter 02 ~Enter the New Customer~ A/N: Aw, it's so sweet, the way Kame's gang takes care of the otherwise hopeless people around their headquarters at the abandoned church. Though I wonder... because it's equally true that he's not afraid to kill if he has to... so I guess it all evens out in the end.
Oooh, and Jin's mysterious friend. Well, we'll find out more soon enough.
But I can't help but wonder if Jin did kill the security at the bank (I know, I know... I'm the one who should know that; it's just that I'm having a hard time deciding based on who this Jin is). He's not afraid to kill either. I guess they both learned to take care of themselves the same way. The streets aren't kind.
Ah, well. On to next chapter of U.P. and then back here :)
