The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 05 ~The Friend~
Jin had been walking down Pearl Street three days ago on his way back to the abandoned hotel when he saw a man with dark, unruly hair stumble out from between two buildings. At first, he hardly recognized his friend, thinking it was just another druggie. But then the man turned slightly and there was no doubt.
That was his friend and his friend was definitely high on something.
Rushing to his side, Jin all but dragged him the rest of the way out of the alley and made him sit on the ground, leaning against the building. “I’ve been so worried about you! Is this what you’ve been doing since you disappeared? Taking drugs? God, I thought something serious had happened to you! I thought you were lying dead in the gutter somewhere!”
“Who…?” his best friend looked up at him, confusion spreading across his face. It took a moment but finally his friend seemed to recognize him and when he did, he just started crying softly.
“What are you on, Tat-chan? What did you take?” Jin asked, snapping his fingers in front of his friend Ueda Tatsuya’s face to get him to focus. “How much? Answer me, damn it!” He couldn’t believe his friend would do something so monumentally stupid. Didn’t he already have enough to deal with? Why would he take drugs?
“Jin…?” and Tatsuya reached up with one hand. Jin felt the questioning fingers on his face before his friend’s arm dropped down to his lap again. “Where am I?” He sounded so lost…
Wait, what was that? His wrist… There was something there. Something off. “Give me your arm.”
He was shocked as Tatsuya started shouting, “NO! No, you can’t have it! You can’t have it! Leave me alone!” He started to cry harder, jerking his arm away every time Jin reached for it.
“Hold still, damn it!” Jin exclaimed, thoroughly frustrated as he once again reached for his friend’s arm. He managed to snag hold of the sleeve which allowed him to finally grab the arm with his other hand. Shoving the sleeve up past the elbow, Jin could see rough marks around the wrist and three needle punctures in the crook of the elbow.
Oh, god… “Tat-chan, these are rope burns! What happened?!”
“No more needles…” his friend sobbed. “No more… no more…” He weakly tried to pull his arm out of Jin’s grasp and Jin let him.
Anger seethed barely contained in Jin’s chest at the condition of his friend. It was that pimp’s fault. It had to be. Either he set it up or, if he didn’t, he at least should have made sure it couldn’t happen! Wasn’t it his job to protect his stable? Oh, wait, no, that’s right… the pimp’s job was to take most of Tatsuya’s earnings and force him to take on customers he didn’t want and smack him around if he complains!
But even Jin didn’t think the man would go this far. Tatsuya had bruises now and again but, well, all pimps were like that, right? Jin didn’t like it, but his friend always played it off, saying it wasn’t so bad and that at least he had someone watching out for him even if it was for an ulterior motive. And for the most part, Tatsuya could take care of himself. He was a lot stronger than he looked.
“Come on… let’s get you inside…” Jin decided to bring him back to the hotel with him. He couldn’t just leave him on the sidewalk in his state.
And so that’s what he did. He took care of him through the night. Once the drugs had worn off (Jin could only assume it was heroin), it wasn’t all that hard to convince Tatsuya not to go back.
He could tell his friend was scared. As a general rule, pimps don’t like it when their whores quit. Some get downright nasty about it. Like, murder nasty. But Jin promised he wouldn’t let that happen. He promised to keep him safe. They stayed at the abandoned hotel, eating the bit of food Jin had stashed around the place.
Maybe someone had seen them when Jin was helping Tatsuya down the street and to the hotel. He didn’t know. All he knew was that bright and early the following morning (yesterday), Tatsuya’s pimp kicked the mattress the two friends were sleeping on and four enforcers held Jin back as a fifth grabbed Tatsuya.
Jin struggled against the men that held him as he watched the other man dragging his friend away, but with four against one he wasn’t having much success. And once Tatsuya was out of sight, the pimp turned his attention to Jin.
Everything about the man was orderly from his hair style to his clothes, except for the horrible scar of a socket where his left eye should be. So creepy… The man crouched down right in front of him.
“You seem to think you’re allowed to interfere in my business.”
Growling, Jin shouted, “I don’t give a flying fuck about your business! He’s my friend and I swear if you hurt him again I’ll skin you alive and leave you where the rats will find you!”
“Colorful…” the man chuckled. “So, here’s what’s going to happen. You can either buy him off me by Friday or you can come work for me until you’ve earned enough to buy him. Otherwise, I’ll kill him. And then I’ll come back for you. Do you understand me?”
“How much?” Jin spat angrily.
“I think forty thousand dollars would about cover it.”
What? How the hell was he supposed to get that kind of money? “Forty thousand? Please tell me you’re joking.”
The guy kneed him in the stomach, leaving him coughing. “Not hardly. You know your options. What you do about it, I leave that in your hands.” He snapped his fingers and the men holding Jin down released him. They all left while Jin was trying to get his breath back.
Jin spent the rest of the morning trying to find Tatsuya but nobody had seen where they took him. Then he took what little remaining money he had and stopped by Maru’s for a drop gun and some ammunition and decided his best bet would be to rob a bank.
So the very next morning, he chose a bank at random.
And then everything went wrong.
And now he had no idea how he was going to get that money. He sure as hell didn’t want to go work for that creepy one-eyed pimp, but he also didn’t want his friend to die. At that moment, it seemed like that was exactly what was going to happen.
And that’s the exact story he told to Kame.
Kame got a strange look on his face during the story and finally asked, “What did you say your friend’s name was?”
“Ueda Tatsuya. Why?”
Kame shook his head and left the room, locking the office door behind him. And now Jin was more confused than ever.
+++
The door barely closed behind him, Kame started shouting loudly for Koki. It took a few minutes to find him but he eventually tracked him to one of the smaller rooms of the church where he was reading to the street kids again.
Kame probably should have checked there first. Koki did that a lot when he wasn’t out on a job.
“Hey munchkins, can I steal him for a moment?” Kame asked the children.
“Bring him back safe!” the little girl in his lap exclaimed cutely as she scrambled down to let him stand up.
“Here you go, princess. See if one of the big kids will finish it for you, okay?” Koki said gently as he handed the book to the little girl.
Walking over to Kame, he asked, “So what’s up, boss?”
“Did you know a man named…” oh, what had Jin said the man’s name was… ah! “Ueda Tatsuya?”
The smile fled from Koki’s face. “Not in front of the kids…” he whispered. Kame nodded and the two of them walked out of the room and down the hall.
“I know him. Or, I did. I worked alongside him, you know, before. Before you saved me. What happened? Is he here? Did he get away from that bastard?” Koki asked, shaking ever so slightly. Kame hadn’t seen him that worried in a long time. “Please don’t tell me he’s dead… Where did you even hear the name? I don’t think I ever mentioned him…”
“The guy that ruined our bank job, he knows him.”
“Let me talk to him.” But then suddenly Koki stopped and was staring at Kame, at his face. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Huh? Oh, no, nothing. Nothing to worry about, at any rate. Yeah, you can talk to him. He’s in the office still.”
Koki didn’t look like he believed Kame’s claim that nothing was wrong, but since Kame obviously didn’t want to talk about it, he let it be and walked off to chat with Jin.
Rescuing Koki had been one of the most dangerous missions Kizuna had undertaken. That man, that pimp, he was one of the worst. He wasn’t just a pimp, either. He was into everything from drug dealing to arson to murder. He ruled a sizeable chunk of the underground in the city. Half of the gangs in the city paid some sort of tribute to him for one reason or another.
Jin’s friend was in serious danger, even if he managed to come up with $40,000. If his friend wasn't dead already.

Chapter 06 ~Haven't I Been Good?~ A/N: Well, now you know who Ueda is and there's a brief mention of Maru. All that leaves is Ryo and Yamapi, right?
And now you know a bit more about Koki.
I like the image of Koki reading to street kids.
Yeah, I can't imagine Tatsuya just letting someone drug him like that. Apparently it takes ropes AND drugs to subdue him if he doesn't want to play.
