Everyone had finally settled down from the events of the day, but Sam's face was still red. She actually admitted, out loud, that she was crushing on Spencer. She actually said that. And it was supposed to be a secret, a secret buried in the deepest bits of her heart, yet she said it. It just popped out of her mouth without her even thinking. What was worse than even saying it was the fact Carly, Freddie, and, most importantly, Spencer, all noticed. Carly even commented on it. And now Sam's secret was out there in the ether and could never be taken back convincingly.
Freddie went home hours ago, Carly went to bed early, and Spencer was out for a walk. Sam was alone on the couch, waiting. She figured, eventually, someone would have to come into the living room and they would be forced to talk to her. And if they had to talk to her, she would be able to explain it. Normally, her approach would be to hold them at butter-sock point and force them to listen, but this was decidedly more tactful and tact was desperately needed at this point.
She waited and waited and waited some more. Eventually, the growling of her stomach became impossible to ignore. She went to the kitchen and came back with strawberries and whipped cream. She was in the middle of stuffing a particularly large strawberry into her mouth when the door flung open dramatically. It was Spencer. She sat very still, as though any abrupt movement might frighten him away. She didn't even swallow.
"Hey," he said.
"Hey," she replied thickly, her mouth full of berry and cream. She quickly swallowed as he sat down beside her on the couch.
They sat there in awkward silence for about fifteen minutes. Or maybe it was two. Sam wasn't sure. Time had a habit of not existing when Spencer was near. Her heart pounded in her throat as she held her tongue, for once, determined that he should speak first. He didn't.
"Good walk?" she prompted.
"I didn't walk," he replied. "I mean, I did. But I was mostly thinking. I couldn't get what you said earlier out of my head."
"About the chicken at PF Wang's?" she asked, suddenly avoidant; he wouldn't be deterred.
"Do you really have a crush on me?"
Sam took a deep breath. "Yes."
Spencer nodded silently. They both stared ahead for a moment, not looking at one another. Finally, Sam asked, "That doesn't weird you out, does it?"
"Kinda the opposite, actually," he said, looking at her. He turned away again to hide his smile. Sam smiled too and offered him some strawberries.
