I'm actually not the biggest fan of The New York Times or "big news" at all. I just finished writing a paper on the failure of the American media to cover the genocide that occured in Cambodia back in the late 70's and one of the main factors for the lack of coverage was that Americans, only trusting monopolistic news organizations as valid sources, put too much power in the hands of a few institutions such as the Times and the Post. This grants these few news giants the ability to have a direct influence on the way journalists in the U.S. are trained because they are the main source of jobs for news writers. Big news has given American journalists an ethnocentric bias, only covering "Americanized" foreign events, because the news organizations don't find it cost efficient to cover events around the world in which the White House has little interest.
